Lucienetta was the most gracious host. She greeted us herself in town to show us the way. Her family villa was beautifully refinished with all of today's comforts. We love how some of the stones are still showing. The house is supplied with almost anything you could ever need. Even beach chairs and an umbrella.
We enjoyed the black berries in the orchard. They were like candy. So juicy to the slightest touch.
We rented a boat in the port for only $60/hr for a half day. Our two girls, 11 & 14 loved it.
If you need anything, just ask and Luci can help.
We had never visited Sicily before but we love to research our destinations before booking so we bought our tour guides and compared regions, resorts and properties.
Villa con giardino ticked the right boxes and so did Castellammare del Golfo.
You definitely need a car and this was the only negative experience as we chose to use Magiorre for car hire and were massively overcharged for our insurance.
The villa is better than the description. Set in a huge garden/olive grove it has been lovingly renovated by Lucietta whose family home it was until recently.
The downstairs is gorgeous with typical Italian styling e.g. sunken pebbles lit behind glass in the floor and a crimson kitchen. Upstairs were two bedrooms that lead onto a balcony with amazing views over the olive grove towards the sea. Each bedroom does need more storage, we mentioned this to Lucietta who promised to rectify the situation - I'm sure she will. A family bathroom is also found upstairs.
The outside is worthy of more comment with bbq, dining table and two sunloungers allowing for great alfresco dining/entertaining. On one day we were joined by a flock of sheep and their shepherds, we guessed this practice had occured for generations.
Castellammare can be reached by car in minutes.
Lucietta, along with her husband, met us on our arrival in a local bar and gave us a quick but very valuable tour down to the beautiful harbour highlighting the best restaurants. The quality of food was amazing as was the value e.g. 70-100 Euros for two courses of stunning food (mostly fish/seafood) with large quantities of wine for four people.
We used the beach near to Scopello where sunbeds and an umbrella were 10 Euros for the day for two people (are you listening Greece?).
We loved our first visit to Sicily and will be back.
We loved the food, the weather (even though we had thunderstorms), the villa and its owners and our day trips. Palermo was both beautiful and depressing a real enigma as our research had warned us.
Our only complaint was Magiorre the car hire company, use a different provider.
