“Home away from Home”
Reviewed 6 September 2008

While on a cruise in Alaska I suffered a mild heart attack and was flown to Providence Hospital in Anchorage. Since Anchorage wasn't on our agenda, we had no idea about where my husband could stay while I was in the hospital. Thanks to a very friendly and helpful staff at the hospital we were told about the Alaskan-European B&B. It isn't overly fancy but it certainly felt like home. Irene, the owner, took excellent care of my husband until I was discharged and then she took good care of me also! We were literally stuck in Anchorage with no way home. Because of the oncoming Labor Day holiday there were no available flights, motorhomes or cars. While we stayed with Irene, people from all over the world came and went. People from Germany, France, Canada,etc...Irene could speak seven languages so they all felt at home here. The table was set for breakfast whatever time you woke up and Irene does all the cooking herself! If you are ever in Anchorage and need a friendly place to stay I would definitely recommend "the Alaskan-European B&B! If you do stay there let me know if Irene makes a special kind of pancakes with a secret ingredient that I told her about!

The owner was friendly and very knowledgeable about Anchorage and surrounding area. B & B is in a residential area but within easy walking distance of shops, movie theatre, and restaurants.

Rooms and shared bathrooms were small. Breakfast was simple. Overall, the B & B is about what you would expect for the price of $99/night (about 1/3 of the cost of a good hotel in Anchorage).

I have no idea, what th eother guy is talking about.

When I stayed there, the house was lovely,
Irene is an elegant, cosmopolitan hostess, who
made lunch for a few of the guests who
were staying around, and was all in all a
perfect hostess. Sure the house is from the 70's.
Big deal. When I showed up at 1 AM, she was
waiting up so that I could get settled in, then
she was up at 6 to make breakfast for the other guests.

It's defintiely different form your typical B&B, in that it's a classic split level house, not a victorian or
guest house, but so what. I'm staying there on
my next trip.

As for the claim of it not being clean? The other
guest was a nuerosurgeon visiting the
university and he was quite comfortable.

Driving directions to B & B were clear; and we were greeted by the owner upon arrival. Both interior and exterior of the property were rundown; an "old" van and pick-up truck sitting in the driveway made parking difficult.Breakfast in the dining room was elegantly set with Irene engaging all guests in conversation. Yet, the crystal and dishes were chipped. She was indeed charming, but not enough to consider staying more than one evening. Experience was generally disappointing.Rooms were located on the lower level, smelled musty; carpet was dirty; all doors and woodwork were chipped; the bedroom door did not lock. The toilet ran all night and bathroom fixtures were chipped and leaking. We had reserved a room with twin beds which had been given to someone else. She did offer us another basement room which we accepted. Rate on-line was quoted at $80 per night-actual billiing was $99 plus $10 fees $109 total.
