Description: Fish Hopper - Kailua-Kona * Experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean at The Fish Hopper Seafood and Steaks, overlooking Kailua Bay on the Big Island Hawaii. Enjoy fresh Big Island and seafood flown in weekly from California. Our bar serves up signature Bucket of Fire and Volcano flaming drinks and is the perfect oceanfront location to gather with friends for Happy Hour. We are within walking distance to shops and historic sites. A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local favorite Kona restaurant since 1934. The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment. Open daily from 730am-930pm.

We ate here a few times and all meals were good, not great. I would say that it's worth trying. the price was OK but again nothing special.

“You will probably want a pizza after.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

12 yr old son & I each ordered swordfish at Kona restaurant. His was a small piece, mine noticeably smaller. Came on top of some mashed potatoes and vegetables. A small stack of food in the middle of the plate. Ate in a couple minutes. Tasty but a very poor value for the price. They need bigger, even sized portions or to at least provide some bread. Person who recommended said she "is not a big eater", didn't get this was code for small portions, but know now, and won't go back or recommend.

“If you are craving imported seafood options, this is probably the best choice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2012

Large dining area, right across from the water - nice view, not too much road noise if you are sitting at the window next to the street.

Definitely a large selection of seafood – ono, ahi, sea bass, shrimp, mahi-mahi. Entrees are in the $16-$29 price range. Lots of tropical drinks. But only a few wine choices – mostly low end cab and zins with one pinot – no Shiraz.

Décor was tropical, food was good (not great) and service was simply average.

If you are craving imported seafood options, this is probably the best choice on this part of the island. However, there are better choices for quality, value and service.

“Food just o.k., Service terrible”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2012

We, a party of 2, had lunch there @ 11:30 on a Wednesday. The place was only about 1/3 full, but the service was very slow. The server forgot to bring the lemon for our water until the 3rd request, then sent over someone from the bar w/the 2 slices (1 for each glass). When we requested extra napkins, same thing. I had fish tacos, which were o.k., but not nearly as good as the 3 other places in Hawaii that I had them. Lots of cabbage, very little fish. I got the impression that it was more of a bar w/the restaurant as an afterthought. It is on the main street by the water, so it gets a lot of business, but I would give it a pass.

“Really great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

Went here on our final night of our 6night stay on the big island and it was really nice. Parking in the back, tho small, was nice.

Started off with some mai tais which were good and reasonably priced. Coconut shrimp was really good. So was the clam chowder.

My wife had the lobster seafood pasta which was excellent. I had the fish trio which was also very good.

The view is also amazing. We sat in the front of the restaurant and you are looking right into the water just across the street. Really nice.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and will definitely be back if/when we are back on the big island.
