The Kailua Pier is the weigh-in area for the Big Fishing Tournament. However, at other times and almost weekly there are races in and out of the water. It is the swimming venue for that part of Iron Man Competition. Daily there will be local fishermen and some charters or tours.

When a cruise ship is docked in the bay, the pier becomes busy with all the tenders coming and going; otherwise, their really isn't much here. Some locals are usually fishing at the end of the pier and others start/end their swim here (it is on the course used for the Ironman Triathlon). It is a good waypoint/turn-around point for a morning walk along Ali'i Drive.

We always tend to hang out around here when we visit Kona. Although most fishing boats now use Honokohau Harbor, charters and cruises still launch from this facility, and recreational, shopping and dining opportunities abound. Construction of the pier and its seawall originally began in 1900. The stones used here were recycled from ancient Hawaiian royal palace walls and gun-turreted forts. When the structures were rebuilt in 1950, stones were scavenged from the enormous stonewall that once surrounded Ahu'ena Heiau Temple.

Kailua Pier is located next to King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel and the seawall runs between the pier and Hulihee Palace on Alii Drive. The address is 75-5660 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740. Limited free parking is available.

This is pretty much the start point of the Kailua Kona Tourist district on Ali'i Drive. Its also the launch point for the Iron Man Swim.

Come at dusk and check out the birds all flocking to the massive Banyan Tree just behind the pier. What a racket and performance they put on.

Theres a small beach if you want to sit on the sand for a bit , but I personally wouldn't swim here since there is a sheen of oil from the boats on the water surface.

Beginning in childhood, I always love to walk on the local pier to see what is happening. Many tours start here--be it para sailing, evening dinner cruises or swimming with dolphins. One night we watched the luau next door until we got bored and then saw guy reel in a four foot eel. Nice night walk a block from the hotel.
