Had an awesome visit. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to help us enjoy our stay..

Paul and Donna Maria (the managers) work hard to make everything perfect and special. Mary Lei (relief manager) was so friendly too!

The housekeeping department (Tonya and Cynthia) kept our place spotless.

They have almost everything you could imagine needing to borrow to take to the beach.

The place was noisy from the waves, but we knew about that and brought ear plugs. Our lanei was only about 25 or 30 feet from the ocean.

Ignore the parking issues mentioned here, we never had a problem and if the lot was full more parking was nearby.

Even thought there wasn't air conditioning we were always comfortable.

One day the ocean waves were splashing over the sea wall into the pool while I was swimming......it was so cool. Where else are you this close to the ocean :)

The breakfast is basic but very good. Fresh fruits, toast, bagels, coffee and juice, perfect.

I understand why so many people return again and again.

This apartment was the best of our USA holiday. It was large and comfortable and well stocked by owner. Good under cover parking. The view over the ocean from the 2nd floor was fantastic to wake up to. It was a few miles out of Kona but was not a problem with a car. A lift was available at one end of the building.

We appreciate these kind words and 5-star rating; however, we are confident this review is for a condo complex. We are a hotel with rooms overlooking the ocean, but no apartments, nor under cover parking are part of the property. We are a mere .8 mile from town, as well, but thank you for taking the time to share your review.

All I need is the ocean breaking against the rocks along the patio leading up to the sliding glass doors of our room in this mid-century motel masterpiece. You want glitz? You want service? Go somewhere else. This place got heart.

The Kona Tiki is a one of a kind experience and a wonderful one at that. It was our first visit to the Big Island and we could not have chosen a better place. We came to explore the island, and there is no better place for us. Because of its age, and newer regulations...it is nearly impossible to find a place like this right on the water.

Location: Located close enough to walk down Ali'i to shops, restaurants, the pier, farmer's market and more...you can't beat it. Not if you want to be on the ocean. To be very clear: If you don't like the sound of waves crashing, this isn't the hotel for you. All night long, the waves crash against the rocks and tidewall. Depending on where you are in the hotel, you may also hear road noise or traffic. Anyone from a bigger city wouldn't think anything of it, and in the end what I found special about it was that it reinforces the Kona Tiki as a tropical oasis.

Rooms: The rooms are basic, not TV, no A/C...and ours had a small kitchenette. This is our 5th trip to Hawaii and we shop at Walmart/Safeway for most food and eat out about once a day. The room was charming, and like most people we had the door and windows open most of the time. The front desk can give you a fan as well, which we used some but it wasn't really needed with the ocean breeze.

The location proved to be especially great as we left each morning to explore and do different things.

Staff: Awesome. So helpful, and treated like longtime friends.

Parking: No problem at all. Seriously. I don't even understand why people have an issue with this. Just park 100 feet across the street where there is ample parking and there is nothing to worry about. Easy peasy. If you expect to park next to your room, maybe Hawaii or the Kona Tiki isn't for you but this problem is grossly overstated in reviews I read beforehand and frankly, most condos, timeshares or resorts require a much bigger effort in the islands. To the north, one resort has a ferry and a monorail to take people from the parking area around the resort. Seriously.

Pool and Lounge Areas: The pool and grounds offer a great place to lay out, relax with a book or take a swim. We didn't use it very much but found it to be wonderful when we did.

Breakfast: Every morning a basic breakfast of baked goods, fruit and coffee were laid out. Sugar/sweet isn't my thing so we never had it but it looked good.

5:30 Pupus: Many or even most of the people who come to Kona Tiki have been there before. At 5:30, people gather by the pool/breakfast area and often bring a snack or something to share and people have a social happy hour. This is completely options. Everyone was wonderful and gracious to us as newcomers at the one we went to. Ultimately, we did other things except for two nights but it was a wonderful group. They tipped us off on Sundried Specialties in Kealakekua which is a dive fish market that has incredible lunch foods. Try the lobster crab cake.

What Needs Improvement: The biggest issue I had on the trip was that the Wifi just didn't work and/or had a poor connection speed. This is fatal. It has to be fixed. I have a hotspot so I could get by, but in a hotel with no TV....people expect to rely on streaming to their personal devices. So they can watch a movie or do whatever on a without the annoyance of TVs turned on and blaring out all of the open windows. This has to be fixed, and it isn't expensive to resolve. Charge a little something if needed, but don't underestimate how much this puts off people. Especially newer generations.

Overall, I can't say enough good things about the hotel, staff, and experience. We will be going back without question next year as we continue to explore this island and hike more trails.

Thanks Kona Tiki!

Mahalo, Heath, for your wonderful and uplifting words about the Kona Tiki. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us, and that you found our spot as a great launching pad to all that The Big Island has to offer. We appreciate your candor about the wifi. The cement and lava rock walls provide an extra challenge for the signal, so we have been researching options. Hopefully we will have a solution soon. We are grateful for your time in writing your feedback, and for your well written review. We look forward to hosting you again, soon.

A true hidden gem. This property is on the water with a pool. The property has the appearance of old Hawaii, like in the Elvis movies. Our room had a kitchenette - mini fridge came in handy. We visited this property the second week of March. The tradewinds and fans kept us cool and the sound of the waves drowned out most of the traffic. Take a smartphone or tablet to keep you occupied if you need entertainment. Don't miss the morning eel feeding after breakfast. Parking can be tough, but the location is worth it. This is a very family-friendly property. I will surely recommend!

Mahalo, Travelguy, for the positive comments. We are grateful that you took the time to share your experience, and even more grateful that you spent time with us at the Kona Tiki. Our small team endeavors to make a big difference. On a side note, the eels have been hiding lately. They must have been putting on a show for all of you here in early March! Happy Spring and thanks again.
