My family has a studio in Oostduinkerke, for more than 16 years I spend every summer holiday on the Belgian coast. So it’s logical that we have already eaten in several local restaurants, but there is one restaurant that really springs out and that is ‘De Mikke’. This steakhouse is famous for their delicious grilled steaks, people come from all over Belgium to enjoy this delicacy. On the outside it’s a very old farm, this year ‘De Mikke’ already exists 40 years and they have never changed their location neither their concept. The building isn’t very appealing from the outside and unfortunately the inside isn’t much better. Their tables have a repulsive red plastic tablecloth and they serve their food on a wooden cutting board instead of on a nice plate but this way the restaurant creates a home atmosphere. Another disadvantage is that you can’t reserve a table, so you need to come very early in the evening if you don’t want to wait half an hour or longer. But we always say: “never judge a book on his cover”, because they serve delicious dishes. One of my favourites is the brochette, the meat is very tender and it really melts in your mouth. The taste is very special because it was grilled on a stone grill. The brochette or steak is always presented on a wooden cutting board with a little bit of lettuce and a slice of bread of the local bakery ‘Espero’. You can also order an extra bowl of salad, French fries and their sauces assortment with their famous spicy sauce. The service is very lovely and irreproachable, the waiters are very gentle and after 16 years you know them very well and vice versa. I really can recommend this charming restaurant to small families with children and couples who like to eat grilled food. If you want to come with a larger group, it is not so easily to have a large table because you can’t reserve.
