Every time we get to the point of booking our annual ski trip, we face a tough choice; go somewhere different to enjoy the new experience, or return to the Muehle and be wrapped in luxury.
Again we chose to return to Obergurgl, and the fantastic Muehle. From the moment Alexandra greeted us at the door, and swept us into reception to enjoy a glass of welcome bubbles, to the moment we embraced her to say goodbye, we were made to feel VIP members of the extended Muehle family.
We continue to marvel at the amazing refurb job the owners did here. Remodelled and massively upgraded, the facilities are brilliant and make a skiing trip here easy. If you decide not to ask for the VIP minibus to take you to the nearest lifts, the frequent ski bus stops literally outside. Picking up hired skis etc couldn’t be easier as a result of a symbiotic arrangement with the best ski hire shop in the village - and you get a discount.
Even the boot room is luxurious, large with rolling ski racks and extensive heated boot racks. You walk straight out on ground level to the bus stop.
The newest rooms have loads of clothes storage space (a frequent criticism of other places we have stayed) and are unfailingly warm (only criticism is sometimes a little too warm, but you can ask for it to be turned down). The bar is gorgeous, brilliantly designed with wood and slate, and the gourmet 7 course sampler dinner is served in a large, modern dining room by courteous staff in traditional costume.
All the staff are gracious, friendly and helpful. It sounds twee to say they give the impression they want you to have a good time, but it’s true.
So, when we face that choice again next year......go somewhere new or return to familiar luxury, the answer is clear.

Our Ski Holiday Feb 2018.

We got the 3.20pm out of Manchester which left a little late. The 90min flight on the new 757 was uneventful. The approach to Innsbruck can get interesting. .......it is via a valley with a 90 deg turn halfway down and cliffs can be seen wizzing by on both sides of the plane . The stewardess was telling me that pilots landing at this airport have special training. Also as you drop into the valley you can get chop coming off the surrounding peaks. Nothing to worry about if it's dark because you can't see anything
The luggage was out in minutes and the Crystal reps were on the ball. The transfer to Obergurgl took little over an hour. The coach drops off (first drop) right outside the hotel.

The Hotel

The upshot is we arrived at the hotel after 9pm hungry and a little tired. We checked in and the frindly receptionist advised that we leave our stuff in reception and get some grub. On Saturdays this is easier said than done as the hotel plays a game called 'find the food' (at least that's what I called it) in an effort I suppose, for you to get you to know the hotel........the soup is in reception, the main courses are in the kitchen, the desert is in the basement. .........great if you're not tired and starving......excellent quality food though.

Now to find the room...........ours was in the annex next door we were informed (this was unexpected and not as nice as we were led to believe from the brochure although adequate and clean ). We had to haul our luggage out of the main reception across the frozen snow-covered carpark (in our normal shoes as our snowboots were packed) up some steps and try to find the umarked annex door in the dark and snow. On finding the hotel room none of the lights will come on..........groping around in the dark and fiddling for 5mins reveals a master switch on the wall........oh the joys of travel!
All the above sounds worse than it actually is and normally wouldn't be a problem but when you've been travelling all day........

The problems are soon forgotten once you get into the swing of things and start to appreciate the quality of the hotel and the ski areas. The staff are all freindly and dressed in traditional Austrian gear and speak excellent English and nothing's too much trouble. The 7 course Haute Cuisine evening meals are an elaborate affair. Don't be in a rush to go anywhere. I for one, would be happier with a more substantial 3 courses. This would save the hotel a lot of messing about as well.

Tips:

The hotel is situated 20mins walk outside of Obergurgl. There are no pavements when the snow is piled up. This could be dangerous, particularly at night.
The transfer from Innsbruck takes you via Solden which is covered by your liftpass and skibuses.
At the overly high price of £260 the lift pass is not good value..........be sure to ski Solden to try to get your monies worth. Why don't they offer a limited area lift pass??
The skis are delivered outside the airport building . Go out and turn right (Near the racks).
Take a kettle, cups and alarm clock
Put your skis and boots in the store when you ckeck in. (This saves a lot of messing about).
The anex entrance is the second door on the right (# 38 in case you are wondering )
Don't miss the great tea and cakes in the afternoon although they charge for the tea!
There is only one room with a bath in the annex (This is worth fighting over if you're skiing )
The hotel charges for water so fill your bottles up from the tap.

The food is good but the waiting staff need a kick up the backside. It's unacceptable to sit at your table and wait 20 minutes to be asked if you want a drink, if even asked at all. On our first night it took 2 hours for us to get through the meal during which time we had 2 drinks. Seems to me like they've gone for style over substance. Speaking of drinks it's 15 euros for a single gin and tonic, 10 euros for a 250ml glass of local wine, so try not to be too thirsty.

The hotel itself is nice enough; expect to be treated differently if you're in the annex and not the main hotel... Right down to the colour of robes you get for the spa..staying in the main hotel they're blue, the annex they're white.. You also sit in a different part of the restaurant.

The spa really is great, be prepared to go "Austrian" though (no clothes) if you want to use all of the spa's facilities.

Overall the stay was pleasant enough but I don't think I'd be returning.

A warm welcome to a wonderful hotel. We were in the annex which meant a very short walk to the main hotel for meals, ski room, bar and spa. The 7 course evening meal was excellent and the spa is an excellent end to the day.

This hotel is ideally located if you don’t want to walk to the ski lifts since the ski bus stops exactly outside the hotel and you can choose to go to lifts in either direction. The buses run every ten minutes or so which means you really don’t have to wait for a connection.

The hotel public areas (bar, restaurant etc) are modern having been recently developed. It gives a wonderfully bright feel but uses natural materials to bring a mountain ambiance. The food is a high point; delicious meals every time.

The pool and spa area are also a delight. A good sized pool means that if you want to clock up a few lengths you are able to do so without too many turns interrupting your progress.

It’s our second time at this lovely hotel and we’re sure to be back another year.
