“Another great stay at the gotthard”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

Just returned from a Christmas ski break at the gotthard, but due to travel delay problems only got to stay 6 nights out of the 7!
Ski in ski out is just perfect and we had great weather, we don't normally ski until march each year and did notice that at this time of the year the sun was really low and barely shown itself so did feel that we were skiing in the shade even when the sun was out!

The hotel facilities and food are superb you want for nothing and it is so comfortable with lots of places to relax after a hard days skiing.

We have stayed here too many times to count and would not hesitate to stay again but would go later in the season to get advantage of the higher sun.

Highly recommended!

The Hotel Gotthard exceeded our every expectation from th emoment we arrived. Our family had not been to Obergurgl previously and we were a bit unsure of what to expect. However, the hotel's location and ski resort came highly recommended by our neighbours so we went along eagerly. Upon arrival, we were met warmly by the woman who turned out to be the proprietor. As it was still early morning wwhen we arrived, she wasn't sure if our room was yet ready, but personally went upstairs to inspect it prior to informing us that it was indeed ready. As we settled into our spacious room (good sized double w/ pull out double sofa bed for children) we decided to explore the hotel a bit. The boys (10 &13) immediately discovered the game room (table tennis, foosball, Wii) while my wife and I explored the Spa area. We were expecting to find a small indoor pool, with maybe a Jacuzzi attached and if lucky perhaps a view. We were completely unprepared for the luxury spa that sprawled out before us. Indoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, multiple saunas (steam, dry, Finnish) and areas for silence and relaxation away from the children as well! An absolute dream we wound up taking advantage of on a daily basis after skiing going forward. We then took the short walk down the village to explore. It was a bit of a hike down the steep hill but an easy 5 minute walk. The walk back up was a little more taxing and more so in the snow but easily doable knowing the creature comforts waiting for you back at the hotel. We were able to ski in and ski out of the hotel on a daily basis with ample space in the attached ski & boot room to securely store our equipment overnight. A nice benefit was we rented equipment from the Hotel's partner firm Lohman's which meant we could leave our equipment in the boot room for collection at the end of our stay. We all thought the meals were where the Gotthard team really set itself apart. Beginning with a large breakfast buffet each morning of traditional meats and cheeses but also ranging into freshly baked breads and pastries as well as fruits and cereals and including prepared hot items such as eggs, waffles and crepes. The array of options was an absolute treat! At supper time we were treated to a 4 course meal each evening with 2 courses of starters (each perfectly proportioned) followed by a main and dessert. We never had a bad meal and each evening had the detail of a fine dining experience. I only wish we had left more room fo the amazing cheese course available! We found the wine list to be extensive and opted for an Austrian wine each evening, many of which were recommended selections by the staff. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of each. While not inexpensive, we found them to be reasonably priced for an up class restaurant experience (€27-35 per bottle) and didn't mind splurging in order to match the efforts of the chef and team. Unfortunately, we didn't get to sample much of the afternoon snacks served in the lounge, as we were busy out on the slopes, but I did manage to sample the sausages one day and just missed out on the amazing looking cakes. All in all, a fantastic experience provided by a family and staff that clearly have an eye for detail, quality and service. We look forward to going back many times to come!

I've been skiing to Obergurgl on several occasions and this hotel has to be my absolute favourite. The location for ski in/ski out is brilliant and the atmosphere and service is excellent.
The food is lovely and yes you have to pay extra for all your drinks (except for breakfast time) but I expect that from this grade of hotel in this type of village. The price you pay to get there tells you that this isn't your average ski resort or your average hotel. Both Obergurgl itself and the Hotel Gotthard are special and for that you may have to splash out a bit more but it is definitely worth every penny!

Back in Obergurgl after 20 years and decided it was time to try a touch of sophistication (The little Pension we stayed in before seemed to have been absorbed by the Crystal Hotel). The Gotthard looked to fit the bill and did not not disappoint. What a fantastic hotel. Wonderful owners and staff, fabulous accomodation and amazing tucker (The sommelier was so helpful and kind without any sign of disprespect to non wine officianados and all reasonably priced!) This really was a different class, with excellent spa facilities, ski in ski out and amazing views from the lounge, terrace and spa which we would suggest cannot be surpassed elsewhere in the village. We will be back soon :-) !

Really lovely hotel, but beware of expensive wine list. The wines are average Spa shop types at greatly elevated prices. Cakes are served in the afternoon, but you have to buy tea to go with them. The staff have been instructed not to provide tap water in the evening, so you are forced to buy bottled water at €4.90, this was really greedy.
We had a lovely time but would not return due to the drinking water policy.
