“What you see is definitely not what you get”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

We stayed here in the summer of 2011 for two weeks with our family. We've been to Austria and Zell am See several times but this was our first (and last) stay at Hotel Stadt Wien. Although the hotel is considered to be a 4-star hotel, I have seen much better in Austria. We were assigned a double room on the first floor, next to the stairs that lead to the bar and restaurant. The room provided everything necessary and was clean, but was old (especially the bathroom was not what you expect from a 4 star hotel) and incredibly noisy. We could hear people talking in the rooms next to us, the customers down in the bar late at night, and all the noises of the other guests returning to their rooms after going out. We might have been unlucky with the other guests on the same floor, but even after notifying the hotel staff they did not do anything about it. After five sleepless nights I asked for a different room because of the noise, but this was only possible if we paid a lot extra. The hotel staff was not helpful at all in this matter.

The food at the buffet was average, the choice was extensive, however, most ingredients were not very fresh. The main course was just dissapointing. The portions were very small and the meat was of poor quality and often overcooked. The breakfast buffet was very nice.

In summary, I wouldn't recommend this hotel as I think the quality price ratio is very poor for what is offered.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor are very noisy, as they are situated next to the stairs that lead to th...

We had a family Gallery Room in the Stadtwien which was incredibly spacious, cleaned daily and the beds were delightfully comfortable. The food was delicious and the choice extensive. The communal areas were inviting and relaxing and the service was outstanding. We were a group of 29 (families with children) and would highly recommend this hotel. Great Value.

Room Tip: Spend a little extra on the suites or gallery rooms - they're fab!

stayed last week with our 2 kids - a teenager+ young adult. Had been to Zell am See before so knew it and would recommend it. snow great . Spent 1 day in Sallbach - a fantastic ski area only 25 mins from Zell. Stadt Wein is a lovely hotel. Even though you can ski back to hotel , we'd recommend you leave your skis in the Intersport shop just under the CityExpress gondoloa - its only a 5 minute down hill walk in the morning and on the ski route back to Zell / intersport each evening - you can stop in the Ebenbergalm ( off Blue 12b) for a pint on the ski down- it has a fantastic view over Zell and the lake .There is a ski bus outside the hotel door if you're lazy! The outdoor pool in the hotel is excellent , rooms spotless and food very good and plentiful. Management are very helpful and the staff fantastic especially Victoria in the bar and Thomas in the restuarant . The village is very nice with shops and bars - a good place for apres ski, a walk or a not over active skier ! Its not to far from the hotel yet far enough to be away from any late night revellers . The resorts of Kitzsteinhorn ( glazier sking) and Sallbach are easily got to by bus in 25 mins and Kitzbuhel apparantey just under an hour by train - all I think covered in a super salzburg ski pass . We'd highly recommend Zell as a base and the Stadt Wein the place to stay there .

Room Tip: try get a room on floor 3

We have just returned from a week stay at the Stadt Wien. Zell am see was lovely, Austria was great and the Stadt Wien was pretty much perfect for us. We were very, very pleased with our choice of hotel.

Contrary to the seemingly bizarre negative reviews, the room (203) was large with the most amazing view - see the picture for yourself. The room was also clean, warm, well furnished and with a nice bathroom. There were at least 3 English language TV channels including BBC Entertainment which kept us amused every night with re-runs of One Foot in the Grave, Keeping up appearances and Casualty etc.

All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble.

The restaurant kept us well fed, the breakfast was very nice although the evening meal was slightly disappointing for me some nights as a vegetarian.

The wi-fi cost €20 for the week which was fine but it was slow after 4.30pm as people returned from the ski slopes.

The spa was nice although the sauna was nude only but many people, mostly the brits, kept covered up with a towel. There were 3 saunas at 45, 60 and 90 degrees. I wouldn't call it small like one reviewer did. It's bigger than the spa in the main leisure centre in Swansea. But it could have done with an indoor pool, though the outdoor one was heated.

The hotel is situated just out of the centre up a hill. It's a very easy walk into town and the nearest ski lift, as others say, is just a couple of minutes away.

The town centre has quite a lot of nice shops, a couple of good supermarkets and a railway station (quite a big one as Zell am See is an important centre). We took a day trip by train to Salzburg (well worth a visit, the views from the castle are stunning). It took 90 minutes and was €14 return. There is a narrow gauge railway which also runs into the station. We went as far as Mittersill although the line runs to Krimml. It's a cute little train which goes through stunning countryside at a sedate speed. The return journey to Mittersill was €9.80. Mittersill was pleasant but not very exciting but it's the largest place on the route and we went on the train for the journey/experience as much as anything.

I can't really comment on the skiing. My other half is the skiier. I had a go but it's not my thing. There were no green runs at all in the resort and I didn't like the look of any of the blue runs except one with a conveyor belt lift in Schuttdorf which was probably a bit too level. I overhead people saying it didn't take too long into the week to ski all the runs but I think everyone was so taken with the resort and hotel they didn't seem to care. That's also what my other half thought. We hired from Intersport who have numerous shops over the area and you can hire from one and store/change your skis/boots at another. We bought afternoon ski passes (after 12.30pm) and these were €30.

Only getting around to writing a review now. I stayed there for one week in Aug 2011. Beautiful hotel, family run, v clean, v friendly. Austrian cultural night once a week in the hotel - traditional music etc...also during the summer there is one evening when the town comes alive - you should definitely go into the town that night (think it's a Wed night) - live music / food / craft stalls all around the town. We took trips to the Kitzenheinhorn, train to Salzburg and got train to the Waterfalls. We booked all our own days trips, trains etc - however, given the train times for getting back to the hotel etc...nothing much runs after 4pm - you are better going on the organised tours. Also if mountain climbing remember the last cable cars back down the mountains are at 4pm during the summer - so dont miss the last one. Nice mountain up behind the hotel - worth a dander up - the cable car is accessible just below the hotel....ticket is quite cheap and there is a restaurant at the top of the mountain. Overall great summer hol and I'd definitely go back to this hotel. PS states B&B on website but this hotel is all inclusive - you can have lunch in the hotel (pre book though) or like us and most tourists - make your pack lunch at breakfast and take it with you. Bike trip around the lake lovely - takes 20 mins for fast people - just over an hour at a leisurly pace - flat the whole way. PS Hotel is up a steep hill - so may put off those more elderly / with walking aids
