Marcello's is an upscale Italian restaurant on St. Charles Avenue in the Central Business District, a short walk or streetcar ride from Canal Street. The decor and service were both outstanding. There are good street views from the front room, but the intriguing back room has tables that are separated by floor-to-ceiling wine racks filled with a wide selection of wines. There is no wine list. You select your bottle from the racks with the help of your waiter.
The food was equally outstanding. My wife had a classic spaghetti Bolognese and I tried a new-to-me veal dish, veal Palermo. Both were authentically southern Italian. So were the desserts, a chocolate mousse and a tiramisu. With cocktails and a glass of wine each, the total before tax and tip was about $115. A bargain for this quality.
