Owner description: Locally and family owned. Offering eco canoe & kayak swamp tours near New Orleans plus educational outings for schools. For over 40 years Canoe & Trail has guided countless people into the Louisiana swamps. We strive to make each adventure a unique experience mixed with information and relaxation. Our guided canoe and kayak swamp tours are the most rewarding experience into the Louisiana outdoors. We paddle into swamps, along bayous and through local marshes. Loved by residents and travelers we are the most experienced guide service in Louisiana. If a guided trip is not for you, we offer kayak (solo and tandem) and canoe rentals daily! We deliver the boats with all the necessary gear to the launch and give you a little paddle lesson and you will be off on your adventure. Want to rent a few boats for delivery other than Cane Bayou? We can do that as well!

This trip was superb from start to finish. You're picked up in a fairly new model passenger van, and driven across Lake Pontchartrain.
A stop for a short break, then off to the launch point for the Cane Bayou.
The company provides watertight boxes for cell phone, car keys, etc, and waterproof bags for larger items. The group is asked whether anyone is on a time constraint so that the guide will know what to do. A short explanation for the best way to keep a kayak paddle from soaking you as you paddle, and off you go. By the way, this is one of the few companies that provides a choice of kayak or canoe. We choose a canoe. You should wear clothing and footwear that can get wet. Sunscreen is a must, too.
The guide is always on the lookout for various plants and animals, and talks about their place in the ecosystem. We saw snakes, turtles, several alligators, and a glimpse of ospreys in their nest on our way out to the lake.
It's very short paddle over to a spot on the lakeshore for a lunch break. I recommend that you let them supply you with a po'boy sandwich .. the shrimp po'boy was better than anything I'd had in New Orleans proper.
After eating, some photos, and looking over the marsh, it's time for the paddle back. As we passed the osprey nest, at least three were flying around over us. During the paddle back, our group spread out a bit sometimes, gathered back close sometimes, and generally had a wonderful time and great conversation.
After hauling out, we hop in the van and drive to a local ice cream shop for a treat from the company.
The drive back is on the east side of the lake, as the southbound causeway apparently isn't a comfortable ride in a van.

We're told that the pictures that the guide took will be shared with us on Flickr later.

If you're looking for a great nature trip, this is the company to use.

Very knowledgeable guide made this not only a fun paddle on the bayou, but a really interesting insight into the local flora and fauna. Up-close sighting of alligators was the highlight. The gentle pace and super stable kayaks made it accessible for all levels, though the relaxed guide also allowed participants to go at own, quicker pace, as desired. Tasty treat at the end of the tour was a nice touch.

The guide was passionate about protecting the wetlands. He spotted 2 alligators— one baby and one 5ft. I am an experienced kayaker and considered just renting but I think I would have missed spotting the alligators since they are so camouflaged. I also learned a lot about the local plant and Bird life. When we turned to return I paddles back by myself ahead of everyone so still got the feeling of being alone in the swamp.❤️

Sylvia,

We are glad you decided to join us on a trip. Thank you for the kind words about our guide as well. We all work hard to learn as much as we can so we can share it with others. We are glad you also took some time to paddle on your own, as that brings about another aspect of our area. Thank you and come see us again sometime.

We have spent two weeks touring Southern States. We have seen a lot, but the bayou kayaking trip is the greatest memory to have. We had great guides, who are extremely passionate about local flora & fauna and extremely knowledgeable. We were lucky to meet 4 alligators from small baby to Big Jo! We also saw turtles, touched a snake and tried local leaves as a snack and tea drink. I would highly recommend this tour!
