My turn to choose a restaurant for lunch on our weekend in Madison. I'm trying to eat healthier so I chose Jason's Deli. My husband and I were surprised at the number of healthy choices on the menu and the wonderful salad bar. They even have a FREE soft serve machine for dessert when you're done enjoying your local fair lunch!

On Madison’s west side, Jason’s Deli opened a few months ago. We finally had time to visit (near the end of July 2015). It’s on Mineral Point road (the north end of the West Towne complex – over in the corner near Shopko).

The cover of their menu has ‘Jason’s Deli’ followed by ‘And so much more…’
That seems a bit pretentious but they live up to it. If you don’t see the sandwich you want, they’ll put together a sandwich to your order.

Their menu contains a wide variety of sandwiches beyond the basic Pastrami and Corned Beef – like how about “Wild Salmon-wich.” There are also club sandwiches, wraps, and paninis. Then there are Muffalettas, Pastas, Potatoes, Soups and Salads. The offerings are scratch-built but some of the sides like potato chips are pre-packaged. They have a good variety of meats, cheeses, spreads and breads to choose from. There are also gluten-free, vegetarian, and kids’ dishes. (If you are gluten sensitive, ask for a gluten free menu for more detailed information and let the person taking your order know so they can take special care with your order.) There are also free refills on fountain drinks and tea.

A big plus is that they give approximate calorie counts on their dishes. Only approximate because what you have on a sandwich will also count.

I should mention that there is a drive-through and an outdoor eating area. (It would be a good idea to be familiar with the menu before you go through the drive-through or it will take you forever to place your order.)

The décor is what you would call “industrial modern” and is tastefully done. It tempts you to stay and chat after you finish your meal.

Since this is in the West Towne Complex a lot of their business will be with shoppers. It can get very busy at lunch hour or when there is a busy shopping period like Christmas. Note: There is more parking in the back than in the front.

The evening we were there, I had a Quarter Ham and Salami Muffaletta. That doesn’t sound like much – a quarter of a sandwich. Well, what I had was bigger than a Big Mac and it filled me up. It was delicious. If you haven’t had muffaletta before, think of it as Louisiana’s answer to salsa. Everybody has their own recipe for it so muffalettas can change from place to place. This muffaletta mixture was heavy on the black olives, which provided the distinctive flavor. It was good with the ham and salami. Other muffaletta mixtures I’ve had were heavy on other things like sweet peppers or onions or pickles. I’ll take a muffaletta to salsa any day.

And a tip of the hat to Joanna. After watching her work for a while, it was apparent that she is the sparkplug of the crew. She was always busy with something, cleaning, restacking things, etc. and when she greeted customers, she made them feel genuinely welcome. That’s actually a hard thing to do and that’s the kind of person you want up front with your customers.

We’ll be back again.

Recently had the opportunity to dine at the Jason's Deli located near the Westowne Mall. I found the menu selections great, the salad bar exceptional, and the location very convenient.

Take a salad bar out of a grocery store, put it in the middle of a room, grab some packaged lunch meat, making sure one of them is pastrami, and a couple loaves of bread. Then take some bags of chips off the shelves, add some cans of soup including Hormel's no-bean chili and you've got a restaurant you can call a deli. Then design it so customers have to line up in amongst those eating to order. Oh ya, add a soft-serve machine at one end of the room. Add a name to it, like Jason's, to personalize it and you've got one of Madison's new, pricey salad/sandwich places. Enjoy!

Jason's Deli is new to Madison. Step up from the usual sub sandwich. But it will cost a little more.
