This looks like a very beautiful place, but we were being carried away from the mosquitos so we did a quick loop and ran back to the car! We wished we could have seen it without all the friendly mosquitos.

We just went yesterday to smell lilacs. The Arboretum is always beautiful - especially in spring! It's well maintained and a true asset to Madison!

What a magnificent campus. If you don’t have time for a hike, just a drive through will introduce you to this beautiful spot. You can drive along the lake and view dorms which have world class views, picnic point, the gardens, stately homes and lovely old buildings. This has to be the most beautiful of the big ten schools. Stop for lunch at the student union to get a flavor of campus life.

We saw a huge and gorgeous turkey cross the road right in front of us about 10 feet away, it was absolutely beautiful, and this is in mid March! Great for birdwatching, we saw an enormous pileated woodpecker making a tremendous amount of noise pecking at a giant tree, we saw nuthatches and mallards, deer tracks. I imagine this place would be fantastic for animal watching in summertime. The spring that bubbles up from underneath a big tree is worth seeing, as I like all forms of water features, and it interests me to see water come up out of the ground, as if by magic. Lots of people walking, jogging, hiking, and biking even though it was about 45 degrees outside. The Visitor Center is very pleasant, the desk person super informative and helpful. It's worth giving them a few dollars in donation to keep up the trails and such, seeing as how there is no fee to get in.

There are basically two parts. South Arb is one beast and is connected to the main place via a tunnel which puts a person through a pine forest and on to an oak savanna. The public building has helpful people and a shop. Expect to be astounded by birds and turtles as you wander around. There is a field of lilacs and other trees that is peaceful and has benches. Benches! I love benches.
