Owner description: A 3-mile bike path along Lake Monona.
Reviewed 5 September 2016

It is nice and relaxing to take a walk or run near Monona Lake. You can rent a bike and spend the day biking around the lake too.

Lake Monona is usually calmer than Lake Mendota. My two favorite places to watch it are from Olbrich Park and John Nolen Drive. John Nolen Drive area is busy and bustling. The Pontoon porch and Betty Lou Cruises also dock here. There a variety of places to eat here. Olbrich is wide open spaces with a public dock area also. This is a park to throw a Frisbee, play basketball or whatever.

This is a beautiful trail along the lake. It is mostly shaded. It starts (or ends) at the Terrace of Univ. of Wis. This is a fun place to stretch or get a bite to eat or drink.

I'm lucky enough to actually live along Lake Monona. You can vary your activities from anything from walks about a mile long through Brittingham Park around Monona Bay, to a fifteen mile bike ride around Lake Monona as a whole (admittedly the lake loop does stray from lake, but it does take you through some nice areas of Madison and Monona).

This is a great training course for a longer race. You can easily vary the distance from 11.5 miles on up. There a few short hills but mostly flat and the views of the isthmus and capitol are inspiring when you're feeling a little tired. In the summer months there are a good number of water stops available.
