We were traveling from Utah to Montrose, CO after a couple really rough nights of truck camping, when an unexpected Winter storm hit the mountain passes and stranded us in Cortez, CO.

We chose to stay at the Retro Inn first and foremost because it is pet friendly, but also because of the great reviews on TripAdvisor.
The price of $60 per night was an added bonus!

It was before noon when I called to book a room. I explained our situation, and DeeDee said we could come right on over. We were all exhausted and so thankful we did not have to wait for a set check-in time.

The motel is pristine and well cared for. The rooms are decorated based on the the year, which is also your room number. We were given room 1968. A great year, as it is also the year I was born. Our room was simply decorated with photos of the space mission and one wall painted blue.

The room smelled fresh, looked well sanitized and the beds were more comfortable than our stays in 5 star hotels.

This was our first experience needing a pet friendly place. There is a nice grassy commons area to walk your dog... leave no trace! We did choose to use our own bedding so that our dog could get on the bed with us. He absolutely loved motel life!

The motel is very convenient to stores and restaurants on the main street through town.

At checkout, DeeDee allowed me to tour their vintage RV when I told her that we own an RV rental business. We were also given substantial to-go snack bags since breakfast can not be served due to Covid.

We are not hotel/motel kind of people. We normally camp, but we found ourselves talking about our motel stay for days. We even both agreed that we would travel back to Cortez just to stay here again!

For traveling in covid-19 times, we found the accomodations to be perfect! Each room is themed for the year of the room number. Example: Room 1956 is for Elvis. The room was very retro and decorated to match the times. Bed was comfortable and each room has a door to the outside so no mingling with other guests. It is pet friendly and we enjoyed a basic place to stay that was fun. Located about 10 minutes form the Mesa Verde National Park, which is another great place to visit. Since there was no continental breakfast during covid-19 times, they gave us a bac with goodies, which was appreciated!

Room tip: Pick a fun year, like your birthday

The Retro Inn was a great place to stay to visit Hovenweep and Mesa Verde. This old motor hotel has been revamped and offers a clean and comfortable stay. The beds and pillows were new. Doors are numbered 1960, 1979, 1983 and reflect a year. Inside the room is decorated with movie posters from that year.

We visited during the ongoing pandemic and due to local rules, they could not serve breakfast. Instead they offered a 'snack bag' that included a bottle of water, yogurt, a granola bar, and a homemade muffin! We were also offered frozen tamales or burritos to take back to microwave in our room. the motel is inexpensive and a great value.
Did I mention how clean it was?

This was the second time we have stayed here. Last time was pre COVID and this time was during COVID. It’s so sad to see the lobby so changed from the fun welcoming vibe of before to the strictly followed COVID procedures. We were grateful for their adherence to the protocol and didn’t suffer for any quality. Still a great place to stay with all the charm of motels of past, only with updated, clean, easy atmosphere. Love this place...and I’m really picky. ‍♀️

This is a nice repurposed motor hotel with bright colors and nice clean rooms. You can park right outside your room. It is easy in and easy out when you depart. There is a nice clean grass area in the middle island where the driveway circles throughout the circular driveway to the rooms. It feels like the 1950's but is bright and clean.
