If you are planning to visit srilanka in march then i would suggest to skip this place as march is the season when they plant new flowers. so there wont be much to see during that time. Also you can find a board outside displaying the same, I would suggest to visit pinnawala botanical garden instead

I visited the Hakgala gardens with family and friends during a visit to N'Eliya. The flowers well be ready for the May -September season. The back drop reminds me of the Yosemite park at times. The fern forests with the small waterfalls were a photographers delight as were the orchids. The monkey species that roam around are unique to Sri Lanka..The gardens are well cared for.It will be a kaleidoscope of colours during the season especially the roses.

We realised that the best displays of annuals would be in April but there was still lots to enjoy, especially the extensive hillside fernery and the general ambience.

It was solo visit in a morning.
Its a green and natural park. Very well laid, planned, clean with wide variety of flowers, gardens, trees. Its a place to be for one to two hours.
If you have visited the kandy botanical garden you can skip it, because kandy botanical garden is very big.
