Looking for an accoodation during your trip to Nuwara? Search no more! Wasantha, Chitra and their Mama will surely make your stay one of the most comfortable you have ever had anywhere.

The rooms are superclean and you will get warm blankets to stay warm at night (Nuwara is pretty cold at times!). The place is up on the hill with great views on the city. But this a real jewel of Sri Lanka for the hosts - the most lovely and hospital people we have met during our trip to Sri Lanka. They will offer you biscuits and tea, make you feel like home, light the fireplace and give any advice needed.

An excellent choice!

This is a really friendly place to stay, with welcoming hosts who will go out of thier way to make you feel comfortable during your stay. Lovely food, brilliant views across the hills and lots of ideas on what to do during your stay - books and toys were brought out to amuse our two year old, and a log fire to warm yourself by at night - what else can we say? An excellent choice

As part of our whirlwind tour of Sri Lanka we made the obligatory stop at Nuwara Eliya. We had already booked in one of this mountain town's many "soulless legacy of British colonialism" hotels and were actually looking for an authentic place to dine in the town when we stumbled across King Fern online. Not knowing if they would feed someone who wasnt staying in their guest house, we dialled them up anyway. Turned out to be the best call we made on our trip! Wasantha, the host, immediately promised to take care of us, and sent round a car and driver to our hotel to pick us up (rather than have us mess about trying to find the place in the dark). Perched at the top of the road leading up Mount Pidiru (tallest mountain in Sri Lanka) the bungalow is actually a several story chalet style guest house. The regular cook (Wasantha's MOM!) was not in town and he had a very capable young crew working the kithcen, who made us an amazing meal while we waited in the cozy fireplace room. The other travellers there were all totally relaxed and chilled out, no doubt due to being pampered by this place. When I asked the kitchen staff if they by chance had any Sambol, they made some up from scratch on the spot -- delicious. The night view of the town from the top-most balcony, lighting up the misty mountain valley, was ethereal. Wasantha's driver took us down to the hotel and then picked us up again at dawn to go trekking up the mountain with Wasantha in the lead. We hiked up to an interim peak of the mountain and the views were spectacular. Getting to know Wasantha was a real treat -- his enthusiasm is genuine and any traveller would be lucky to spend a bit of time at his mountain retreat. Our only regret was that we couldnt have stayed over -- the rooms looked amazing, private balconies and stunning views, but most importantly simply cozy. Thanks again Wasantha!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony.

Dont get this confused with King Fern Cottage which is further on down the road! (Our driver dropped us off there first and after much confusion he picked us up again and took some time looking for King Fern Bungalow) Wasantha and his wife are just the most wonderful people we have ever met, a home from home they immediately make you feel comfortable the moment you arrive and offer you tea and biscuits, Nuwara Eliya is cold! The room we stayed in was basic (the bathroom was nothing special at all) but has this sort of old English feel about it, its very clean and Wasantha will offer you thick blankets at night to keep you warm, the bed was very comfy which is a godsend in Sri Lanka! The food was delicious (maybe one of the best meals we had on our trip) and they will do anything to help you. Stay here just to meet this wonderful couple, we almost felt teary when we had to leave the next day, one night was not enough!

The owner, Wasantha, was the nicest and most obliging and helpful host that we met during our travels in Sri Lanka. He provided us with his mobile number a few days before we were due to arrive in Nuwara Eliya, and when we decided at the last minute to go to Nuwara Eliya a day earlier, he arranged for another local guesthouse - Chez Allen - to take us in for the night (his place was full that night). He then met us in town and escorted us to Chez Allen himself, just to make sure we didn’t get lost!

Not to be confused with King Fern Cottage (owned by Wasantha’s brother), our room was a cosy suite decorated in a homely way with balcony views of Nuwara Eliya. Breakfast can be served on the balcony (we didn’t get the chance as we had a 5am van to Horton Plains the next morning). There are many flowers growing on the small property, and Wasantha even has a badminton lawn if you are so inclined. At night Wasantha lit the fire in our room, although of course we needed to tend to it so it didn’t go out. Even though it gets quite cold in the town overnight, we found the heavy blankets on our bed kept us warm and toasty.

Wasantha’s lovely wife Chitra also provides Sri Lankan meals at an extra charge. Wifi was available for free and, once connected, was fast and worked well in our room. Wasantha organised a van to take us to the tea plantations during the day and went along himself to show us the local waterfalls in the area. He worked as an office worker at a local tea plantation for many years, so he is a good source of knowledge on how the plantations work, and on the living conditions of the tea pluckers. He also organised the Horton Plains van for us at a good price of 3500 rupees.

A tuk tuk from town to the guesthouse will cost 150 rupees and the guesthouse itself is located on a fairly rough village road. Our room cost us 3500 rupees.

Overall a highly recommended guesthouse.
