Five years ago a friend told me about Bali Eco Stay, and I’ve been back every year since then! The place is beautiful, the people are a total delight, and the food is utterly delicious. These things never change, but each time something new seems to have been added. This time it was a complimentary tour of the organic garden, with a fascinating commentary by gardener Kadek on the rationale behind the plantings. After the morning tour, sweet potato fritters tasted even better at lunch as I visualised the vine-encircled stacks of old tyres into which they had been so cleverly planted: functionality intertwined with taste and aesthetic pleasure. At night while I watched glow worms dancing over the rice fields, I congratulated myself again on finding one of the most magical places on earth.

Hi Lucie,
Wow, thank you so much and its always so great to welcome you back every year and this year twice !
The staff so look forward to your visits as do i and of course Ash and Buddha as well ! As we now have quite a few regular guests we try to add different experiences for everyone. At the moment we are going through the menu and improving old favorites and adding some new ones.
Looking forward to your feedback in September.
Please give my love to Tassie and safe travels from all of us at Bali Eco Stay.
Warmest,
John.

We had a four day stay at Baliecostay in late February, and had a wonderful time. The staff are lovely, and the setting is wonderful, in the rainforest amid many small villages and above the rice fields, with views across to Java in some spots. The staff are virtually all local, so are great resources about the surrounding communities. Our cabin was lovely, hanging over the creek, and the food was also very good, and they could accommodate any diet type I could think of. Breakfasts were huge. Most of what is served is grown organically on Ecostay land, or is locally sourced. I loved it, but I like healthy food that is not super-spicy. I’m sure they would respond to requests for a higher spice level if you wanted that, as they were incredibly responsive to all of our requests. The setting is quite magical, and reminds me of what I imagined about old Bali, with so many closely-connected little villages. There are many trekking options available, ambitious or not, town or forest, guided or not, and the walks above the rice fields were especially beautiful to us. One day, John, the owner, took us out to see rice fields we had missed the day before when we mistakenly changed our path, and it was the view of a lifetime. There is a large meditation/ yoga structure. This would be a great spot for a group retreat. The road in is bumpy (like all of rural Bali) but staff will come and get you at Tabanan or elsewhere if you want. WiFi was spotty after a lightening strike, but it worked in the main lodge, and repairs were progressing. This would be a great spot to write a novel, read a novel, or pretend you’re in a novel. Baliecostay, thanks!

Hi Holly,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a in depth wonderful review, we really appreciate it.
It was such a pleasure to meet you both and i really enjoyed our chats and especially taking you both to the stunning rice terraces down our valley and seeing the look on your faces was, priceless. It is at times like these that i love this job so much.
Mother nature and man can work together if there is consideration given to both and The Balinese way of traditional farming ( basic permaculture ) is a perfect example of this.
Happy travels and we all look forward to welcoming you back to Bali Eco Stay one day.
Warmest,
John.

We had a wonderful stay at the Little Padi bungalow - so much sleeping from becoming totally relaxed a day after arriving and being treated to a great balinese massage. You can be as adventurous as you want here but we enjoyed doing as little as possible. The biggest decision was what to try next on the menu. The staff were all lovely and hospitable and everything felt like it was done with love. We wished we'd stayed here right up until we had to fly back home as after such a beautiful, natural, romantic place, we got a bit of a jolt going back to Seminyak before we flew out. This is where it's at!

Lovely retreat for relaxing or exploring. The bungalow was humble and cosy with everything I needed for one night.Staff were all lovely and helpful but discreet. The food was all delicious, but I would have liked to see a few more vegetarian options.
If the sound of water running will keep you awake, select a bungalow further away from the stream or waterfall as they are quite loud, but beautiful all the same.
The gardens are lovely to walk around. The massage was very good.

.

Room Tip: I had the Buddha Bungalow which was right next to the stream which was beautiful but a bit noisy to sleep with.

Hi Ingrid,
Thanks so much for your review great to meet you and we are so glad that you generally enjoyed your stay with us.
I guess its a personal preference sleeping next to a running stream, most guests find it relaxing and drift off to sleep to its gentle rhythms.
Our bungalows by the stream are our most popular but we totally understand not suitable for everyone.
You will be happy to know that as we speak we have a well known consultant chef staying with us tweaking our menu and adding lots more vegetarian and vegan options.
Happy travels and all the best from all of us at Bali Eco Stay.
Warm regards,
John.

One of the most beautiful places on earth. It starts with the journey from the busy city to the middle of nowhere on the edge of the tropical rainforest. The roads are getting narrower and getting worse. A kind of natural protection against mass tourism. After a ride of about two hours you end up in paradise. From the Netherlands, the journey takes more than 20 hours, but every second is worth it.

Hi JR,
Wow ! Thanks so much for your wonderful review and we so enjoyed having you to stay with us and well done climbing to the top of Mount Batukaru ( 2,300 meters ) which is no mean feat ! Its is an incredible trek moving through 4 different types of vegetation and finally getting to the top and that absolutely stunning view ! But definitely not for the faint heart ed.
Looking forward to welcoming you and your family back one day.
Happy travels and all the best from all of us at Bali Eco Stay.
Warm regards,
John.
