Description: Bali Asli is located in Gelumpang village, near the town of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem regency, in the North East of Bali. About 2 hours drive from the airport, and 30 minutes from Candidasa village, and 30 minutes from Amed village. Nestled in the foot hills of Mount Agung, Bali's most sacred mountain, surrounded by rice fields, there is not a building to be seen. Bali Asli promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or it's people. We embrace our community, supporting those who fish, farm and forage in the near by fields, ocean and jungle. Our menu offers authentic Balinese food using a traditional Balinese style kitchen, cooking on wood-fired, mud brick stoves, allowing the real flavours of Bali to shine. Most of our ingredients are either grown in our garden, in our neighbour's garden or purchased from the local market The cooking school runs unique classes themed on "a day in the life of..." every class an adventure into local areas off the beaten track.

This place is well worth the drive. The location is spectacular and the food is fabulous. The casual atmosphere is complemented by delicious fresh traditional Balinese food. Check out the toilets - they're awesome!

We had our local Balinese driver take us to Bali Asli on the back of the trip advisor recommendations and we were not disappointed. Bali Asli is about 90 minutes from Sanur and has a spectacular view over the valley up to Mount Agung. We met the owner Penny and she explained the menu comes from what is grown locally or comes from the local markets. We had the 6 course tasting plate and each course was sensational. Traditional Balinese cooking at its very best. Our local diver ate with us and he was very impressed as well. All meals are prepared by hand without electric appliances and cooked over a wood stove in the traditional way. The view from the bathroom needs to be seen to be believed!! It is well worth effort to drive up to Karangasem for this experience.

We had a great day, 6 guests including 1 child. Our day started off in the market buying the fresh produce, very interesting. Then we were back to learn about the flavours of what we were about to cook with. That was followed by a very well put together cooking class. Finally we got to eat what we had cooked. Very good value if you think of Australian prices. Keep up the good work Penny.
