I took the Crab Shuttle this week for the second time to travel from Kampot to Rabbit Island.
Although the shuttle opeates from Kampot to Kep, Neil the host on board can conveniently arrange for a seamless transfer to your boat to and from Kep to Rabbit Island which only takes about 30 minutes.
As I wrote in my earlier review, the Crab Shuttle is a tremendous way to travel from Kampot to Kep.
During the trip you get some wonderful views of the coast line and are given lots of information about the sites you are passing.
You can book your trip through their Facebook page and Neil will very helpfully respond to any questions that you have about the trip.
This is the most enjoyable and leisurely way to travel between Kampot and Kep and Rabbit Island.
Highly recommended.
We went on the boat to Kep, going there in the morning and getting back in the afternoon. It is a really nice way of traveling. There was water on board, we had a very nice captain and there is loads of information that you can read. I would really recommend this to everyone who wants to go to Kep. Young, old, this is really nice.
This little foreign-owned ferry service is not the cheapest way of covering the short distance between Kampot and Kep, but it is a fascinating journey - well worth taking in at least one direction; and if you go there and back, it's actually one of the best days out you can do from Kampot.
They will sometimes run their own boat on from Kep Pier to Rabbit Island, if they have sufficient numbers of people wanting to make that journey; but more usually, they'll just hook you up with one of the many local fishing boats making the ferry run to and from the island (and it works out a little cheaper than you usually pay if you haggle with the boatmen yourself). Shuttle owner Jeroen can also pre-arrange tuk-tuks or moto hire for you to get around in Kep, if you choose to spend the day there.
The boat leaves from Kampot riverfront (opposite Rikitikitavi) at about 9.30am, and from Kep Ferry Pier at about 4.30pm. The journey's a shade under 2 hours, so you have a good 5 hours in Kep, or just about 4 hours on Rabbit Island. You get great views of the coast, and of the river south of Kampot; returning at dusk, you get a closeup view of the hordes of Cham fishing boats heading out to sea for the night; and there's nearly always a spectacular sunset behind the Elephant Hills as you near home again.
If you love boats, you have to do this!
Did the day trip to Kep (via Rabbit Island) and it was fantastic - best to just sit on the roof of the boat and watch the world go by - once in Kep just go to the market and watch the hustle and bustle of the crab sales and cooking and all other kinds of food.
The sea food is fresh and cheap - get yourself a nice seat overlooking the bay and enjoy the meal - a bit of a tourist trap is Kep.
One of the best trips I have been on in a while - the owner (Dutch National) is very knowledgable about all and sundry and gives a good running commentary on what is interesting
Must do - a day to chill out - take some cold beers and enjoy
After our countryside tour around Kampot we ended up in Kep, and decided to take the Crab Shuttle back to Kampot. We were the only passengers, and it was a nice 2 hours of sailing.
The Crab Shuttle from Kampot to Rabbit Island and Kep is a deliciously enjoyable trip. Jerome the owner is a lovely affable guy and the journey along the river and over to Rabbit Island is just a delight. We even had a fish jump into the boat as we were rollicking along. It was such a beautiful way to spend a day. Thoroughly recommended.
