Maramboi Tented Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 July 2017

I would give this camp a 4-star rating based on:
1. Proximity to Tarangire National Park main gate (20 mins drive); meaning that you could make an early start in the park ahead of the crowds
2. Camp sits on migratory path from Lake Manyara with resident animals, e.g. Wildebeest, Warthogs, Giraffe, etc. roaming the grounds
3. The pool area is quite lovely and well maintained
4.The vista across to Lake Manyara is simply beautiful
5. All local drinks are included in the price
6. There is a happy hour where you can watch the sun go down from the pool decking/ bar area
7. It was nice to be woken by the sound of Wildebeest outside the tents
8. The family tents are spacious and relatively spread out but not too far proving a degree of privacy
9. Sunrise is, again, simply beautiful and it is so peaceful
10. The camp offers Masai walking tours at sunrise but I don't know whether you have to pay for this experience as we didn't partake

My wife and daughter would give it a 2-star rating based on:
11. It is a very large camp with 20+ tents
12. It feels cold and impersonal
13. My wife felt the staff were rude and begrudged being asked to get drinks from the main bar
14. The rooms may be large but they are very basic
15. Dining at night is virtually in pitch black with lighting kept low to avoid attracting insects
16. Insects at breakfast and dinner are a pest with wasps attracted by food
17. There appears to be no opportunity to dine inside
18. You had to make up your own pack lunch each day and if you arrived late the selection was limited
19. It is a very busy camps with quite a few young children
20. Happy hour was confusing given it was all inclusive?!
21. When the winds drops there was thousands of mosquitoes/ midges on route back to the tent; the noise was quite incredible and they got everywhere in your face and hair

My wife and daughter did not like it at all after the other lodges but I overlooked the gripes based on the beautiful location but perhaps I'm besotted with Africa so would probably overlook most things!

In summary, I understand this is a reasonable priced mid-range lodge and so if you stay bearing this in mind and putting aside any other higher end lodges you may have experienced then you should be okay if the reason for staying is because you are visiting either Tarangire or Lake Manyara parks and using this as a place to rest your head. Otherwise, I would not recommend staying here because it is at least twice the size of any other camp we've stayed at across 5 trips to Africa and it feels like it without the expected TLC or customer experience. Have awarded 3 stars based on averaging my 4 and my wife and daughter's 2!

Room Tip: Ask for a tent with views over Lake Maynara!

We only spent one night at the camp, and for that, we will be forever sorry. The place is just absolutely amazing. The common areas are inviting, open, tastefully decorated, comfortable and with a touch of classiness. The infinity pool faces the lake and has lots of areas for hanging out, and ideal for sunset viewing.
Free drinks and appetizers during Happy Hour were for sure a nice perk, and their food in feral was excellent.
The rooms are extremely comfortable and spacious. We had one of their family rooms, wishing it was perfect for our family of 4. The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were very clean and nicely decorated.
We could see Wildebeest, warthogs, and zebras from our deck, and the beautiful view of the lake from the distance.
Out of the 6 different places we stayed at while in safari, Maramboi Tented Camp was our favorite place hands down!

I have stayed in other lodges of this group and they are always in great locations but sometimes the decor isn't right or other elements do not live up to expectations. Maramboi, however, hits all the right notes. The location is super, the tents great and service excellent. A few highlights are the hair dryers, high quality products, places to charge phones etc everywhere, good bed linen, good choice of pillows, excellent food, free drinks, sundowners at the pool and lots of animals in camp. I feel that you get a huge amount of value for the cost. Will definite be back and recommend it to others. Well done team!!!

Our tent was a walk down a long dusty road, which was a little off-putting at first, but this really is a nice camp. The tents are well-equipped, (for example, a water cooler rather than just a couple of bottles,) and the shower and the bed were fine. The pool is magnificent, the dining area beautiful, and the food good. One night there was a barbeque, the next a stir-fry station, in addition to lots of other things of course. The owner was pouring drinks (included) and working alongside staff. It's a fairly large camp but clearly very well-managed. We enjoyed it.

This place rates "best in class", the location and the facilities are all top notch. The property sits near a lake where there are scads of waterfowl and whan we walked with our guide there were nearby animals including a Giraffe who stayed within a few feet of us for several minutes. Our room was very attractive and the patio near the pool was beautiful. Not only are drinks included but before dinner tasty appetizers were there for us.

Room Tip: Our room had a view of the water which I recommend.
