“Cross country skier's paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2012

This was our 15th year of vacationing at Bearskin Lodge, and it seems to get better every year. We vacationed there for a week in February, and no matter how much or how little snow the rest of Minnesota receives, there is always plenty at Bearskin, partly because of the elevation. The trails are expertly groomed, with a wonderful variety ranging from easy to very challenging. For variety, there is a snowshoe trail, an ice rink for skating or broomball, and dogsled rides with a musher who lives in a tipi on the lake in the winter. Of special note this year were the two meals we had at the lodge. Both were terrific, and a very good value. Compliments to both of the chefs. We had enough leftovers from Pasta Night on Tuesday to have another meal later in the week. Over the years, we have stayed in the Lodge, and in a number of the cabins, and every unit is warm and comfortable, with a well-outfitted kitchen for meal prep. We love relaxing in front of the fireplace in our cabin in the evening, but have to say that one of our favorite parts of a trip to Bearskin Lodge is the daily trip to the Hot Tub Hus. Each cabin or lodge unit reserves their own private time, so you can relax those muscles after an energetic day of skiing. The owners Bob and Sue McCloughan and their staff are very friendly and welcoming. It's a perfect winter get-away.

I visited Bearskin Lodge in late January 2012, and in this seemingly snowless winter, there was great snow up the Gunflint Trail, and the Bearskin cross-country ski trails were the beautiful well-groomed wonderland I had experienced in the past. Our cabin was cozy, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our week-long visit. We looked out on a beautiful snow-covered landscape at the frozen lake. You have the feeling of a secluded area, though there was cut firewood right outside the door. I love the solitude and quiet of nature, skiing the trails, and watching birds outside the window coming to the feeder, but I much enjoy creature comforts of a great cabin, and Bearskin offers all of that. We love it there.

Room Tip: All of the locations are great, and there is a wide variety of options. You should pick your cabin...

This was our third year staying at Bearskin lodge and we absolutely love it. The skiing and weather this year were the best we've had. The trails offer everything from beginners to expert. The lodge is warm and welcoming. The cabins are perfect for a quiet getaway or to spend time catching up with old friends. We unfortunately could only stay for three days but could not stop reminding ourselves how truly fortunate we were to in such a beautiful place.

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the bunch

Stayed here with friends for a few days after being several other places over the last week. This was perfect.

Trails were well-groomed, snow was relatively abundant (at least compared to elsewhere), lodge hospitality was appreciated. Wouldn't change a thing, except maybe stay here longer.

Get the chili after skiing, and plan to be full. It's a lot of chili for one person. Trail Center restaurant is very close. Stop there too, it's part of the fun of being at Bearskin.

Room Tip: No rooms, just cabins. They are all different and all the ones I've seen have been nice.

Ohhhh did we ever need a vacation. My husband and I had originally booked for September but the vacation was railroaded by car trouble of the worst kind. The kind people at Bearskin graciously let us reschedule for this trip.
We were in cabin 8, which was fortuitous as it was just a short trip to the sauna, the lodge and the trails. So that brings us to the trails. Extensive, well-groomed and marked and great skiing for miles. We took a day to ski to Rose Falls which was just amazing this time of year; like a dome of ice with a crystal waterfall beneath.
The cabin was really cozy. We fired up the woodstove and vegged apres ski, books and drinks in hand.
The chili was so good and plenty that I enjoyed it the next day for breakfast.
Anyway, we escaped and recharged in the lovely environment that is Bearskin. We will have to head back, probably in the fall, for some great paddling.
