Angel's Nest Bed & Breakfast (AKA: Mary Davis B&B, AKA: The Convent: Angel's Nest B&B) is a beautiful tribute to the life and travels of its owner, Mary Odessa Davis, who was an educator in Europe for 34 years. The house is chock-filled with ornate and wonderful treasures from Turkey, mirrors from France, couches from Spain, wall hangings, hand-made rugs, brass, crystal, silver, and carved-wooden pieces, and, as its namesake indicates, angels, angels, and more angels, collected during her years abroad. Mary retired from teaching and created her 6-bedroom Bed & Breakfast in 2000 in what had been the convent of the Felician Nuns of Rome. The original sanctuary is still there, resplendent with stained glass windows that flood the room with beautiful light all day, kneeling benches, and more of those hand-made rugs and angels, especially Mary's favorite, Gabriel, who hangs on the door to the sanctuary. Each room, nicely-sized and nicely-furnished, is decorated by theme; mine was the Middle East. There are also the E-Tones, Blue Notes, Yellow Mellow, etc. Try to make the time to sit and talk with Mary (who almost NEVER seems to sit still herself!) and you will feel as I did: her home is your home. I have never felt so comfortable and made to feel that I am "home" as I was made to feel by Mary. Listen awhile and she will thrill you with stories of her amazing and unique past, her teaching career, travels, how she came to purchase the former convent, and, just as impressively, how incredibly involved she has become in her adopted town (helping to sustain the Polish Home, doing errands for and caring for neighbors, being on the local school board, and pushing to create a walking/biking path on the Erie Canal, which is just down the block from the B&B). Enjoy the plentiful seating in the expansive backyard with beautiful plantings that Mary so lovingly tends to, sit under the shade of a huge tree, enjoy the many books and magazines scattered around, the Keurig coffee & tea that is available upstairs, or take in some of the local sights (I enjoyed shopping for locally-grown items at the Friday Farmers' Market on Dominick Street and the enjoyed the fireworks at the colorful annual Canalfest at Bellamy Park). Whatever you do, make sure to leave plenty of leisurely time for the terrific breakfast that Mary creates: yogurt & fruit parfait, turkey bacon (for those, like me, who do not eat pork or beef), flavorful herbed scrambled eggs, cinnamon pancakes that were more like a tasty cake! Tea, coffee, orange juice and other items fill the incredibly beautifully set table. Don't forget to drink in the artwork, handcrafted items, the original woodwork, and the obvious love that Mary Odessa Davis and her angels have bestowed on this gem in upstate Rome, NY.
