A tour with Day Clean Journeys is shining the light on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Passage and its many historical branches that lead to where we are today. Jamal Toure’ begins by informing the tourists that this is not going to be a tour, but a journey and that was no exaggeration.

This was the most intimate, customized tour ever. 6 of us in total, and the tour guide took his time to answer all of our questions in a very detailed way. We went to all of the places important to Black people. I feel much more knowledgeable about how African-Americans built and influenced Savannah!!

Just like in Charleston, Atlanta and other cities in the South, a visitor could easily spend a week sauntering along the city’s boulevards and popular attractions, and leave without a clue about the essential role African-Americans played. For this reason I make it a point to embark on an African-American History tour whenever I visit Southern cities, and this tour did not disappoint. Jamal Touré gives a new perspective to a tour of Savannah.

Much of Savannah’s black history has been poorly documented and some cases intentionally omitted. It’s tough to imagine now, but for decades during segregation – and before the urban renewal projects of the 1960s — the pride of Savannah’s black movers and shakers was West Broad Street, now a gritty stretch of vacant lots, public housing and highway overpasses known as Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Jamal takes you around several streets and gives you the truth about everything you see on these several streets. Since many buildings have been destroyed or have evolved into other businesses, you will never know the full history of Savannah until you take this tour.

I highly recommend Day Clean Journeys. Jamal Touré is well-versed in the history of the African American experience in Savannah.

If you are visiting Savannah and want to take a tour please call Day Clean Journeys. This tour has a lot of information on the African descendants in Savannah. Mr. Jamal takes you around several streets and gives you the truth about everything you see on these several streets. So many buildings have been destroyed and turned into other buildings. You will never know the things that took place in Savannah until you take this tour. Who would have known Savannah had so much history! Thank you Mr. Jamal for the information you gave us.
