Owner description: Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Jackie is a well informed historian with a lovely British accent. She obviously finds Savannah's history and art fascinating. She gave me and my group of college friends (40 years of destination reunions) a memorable, insightful tour. She should be commended. Please let her know how much we appreciated her informed views and gracious, charming attitude.
Sincerely,
Marcia K. Mueller ( I live in LA now, but my 5 friends live in and around Eau Claire, WI where we were dorm- mates.)

Marcia.,

We will let Jackie know that she left an impression on your group. And after 40 years of destination reunions, we are glad that you chose Savannah this time. I hope your other UW friends were able to also enjoy our lovely weather this time of year!

Thanks

Beautiful paintings. Unfortunately the upper floor was under going a new exhibit and was not open. Beautiful home. Great to tour all three houses!

I loved that this was another William Jay home. Also that there were so many paintings by women artist.

We were so disappointed with our visit here. It was a Monday and the museums do not open till 12noon. Having wandered around till the museums opened, we went into the Telfair Museum first. We paid 18$ for our seniors ticket. You cannot buy one ticket -you have to have the three museums combined ticket. We had a 1/2 hour visit. We then walked several blocks to the Owens Thomas House to find that there was a wait of over 2 hours for the guided tour ( you have to take a guided tour). We could not wait that amount of time as we had to leave Savannah that afternoon. We mentioned this to the cashier at the entrance and were met with indifference. We wasted 18$ each. Learn from our loss! Go to the Owens Thomas house first and find out the entrance time you are allocated for the guided tour and work the other museums around that time.

Not sure I would do the museum if there were nothing else there, but we had a reception where we could enjoy a passable Cabernet and browse through the art. The building is elegant and the art respectable.
