Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“A must see!”

This cemetery is so large you need a map to get around, it is a sight to see all the people there and how old the tombs stones are and how far it dates back. The staff was very helpful. I found nothing wrong with this location, nothing!

“Beautiful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

People have said to be careful going there without a tour. We drove there and found it to be just beautiful and we didn't feel threatened in any way. I wouldn't go to any cemetery at night anyway!

You can't describe how beautiful it is. Maybe beautiful isn't the right word for a cemetery but it is. The trees the monuments and marshy breeze make for a calming educational stroll with your doggies in tow.

“Amazing history and beautiful to behold”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

Loved it! I think we spent about 3 hours here, but definitely could have done longer. Our boys were with us (they were 8 and 9 when we were there last summer) and they got antsy after about an hour. I will definitely go back someday when it is just me and my husband. After you get the lay of the the land so to speak, it's so magical walking through the beautiful trees and ornate gravesites.
