It is pretty quick and easy to find the Hot Springs Geologic Site after you leave the town of Mammoth Lakes. You won’t need a whole lot of time there, but it is worth a stop for some of the uniqueness and pretty views.

First of all, it’s FREE.

From the parking lot you get a view of the river/creek and can see some of the thermal activity. There is an informative sign. You can walk down closer to everything which is a 5-10 minute walk and is quite easy. On the way down we even saw a cormorant swimming and 2 non-poisonous California Whip snakes (I had to google it to make sure). That was pretty cool. The thermal stuff is neat to see too.

My one issue with this place is the lack of educational signage. Yes, there was a sign up at the parking lot, but they should have had more. There should be a sign about why the different thermal stuff look different. Why is one of them light blue? Why is this pond red? Etc, etc. This was a missed opportunity because like me, I’m sure people would want to learn.

Otherwise, it is neat and worth a short detour.

We were on our way to Tahoe which is about an 8 hour drive. We used this stop as a driving break to get out and stretch. This is a beautiful area with a nice hike along a rushing creek. There are information boards about the formation of the Hot Creek that my daughter was able to make connections to what she had learned in science class the previous school year which was cool. Definitely a "must-see" attraction. The hike down is a little steep and may be challenging for some.

Stopped here on our way from Mammoth Lakes to Lone Pine. Interesting to read the info on the signs. We walked from parking lot to creek. Easy short walk. This activity is short, allow an hour

Getting there right now is a little dicey given that you will encounter patches of snow and puddles. There's room to maneuver around them, however. Most of the way consist of gravel road and there are parts that have bad wash boarding. Still, I think a regular passenger car can manage, just go slow over the rough bits.

At the Hot Creek geologic site there are 2 parking areas. A trail leads down from it and it's not a long walk. At the time we were there, the trail was totally snowed over, but there was a road a few yards up that we were able to use to bypass that section and still be able to go down. There's also a viewing area at the top where the parking lot is, but it's not very good.

This is a nice side trip if you have spare time to explore the area.

This was a biggest surprise and wonder of nature during our trip through California. We were not expecting to find such geothermal place by Mammoth Lakes. It was easy to find through Google Maps. We were visiting in late October when it rained and at freezing temperatures. Really interesting place and highly recommended to visit when in area.
