The Grand Hyatt was the conference venue for a recent mid-sized conference (800-1000 attendees) I attended. Why this hotel was chosen is anyone's guess.

First, the good points, The lobby is spacious and temperate. The New York Central restaurant off the lobby had excellent food and good service. Too bad the guest rooms and conference area didn't follow suit.

The guest room was small and cramped. Try stuffing a king bed, two end tables, a lounging couch and an oval table into a 10x10 foot space and see what happens. The bathroom was equally tiny, with a small sink stuck underneath a shelf, so that you can't really get your face over the sink without risking whacking your head on the underside of the shelf.

That would have been okay if the room had been cool, but it was anything but cool. The ambient temperature wasn't quite on broil, but was easily into the seventies fahrenheit. The HVAC provided more noise than cool air, which resulted in several calls to the engineer to try to fix the problem. Nothing worked. Housekeeping sent up an old boxy 2-foot wquare fan that sounded like you were sleeping on the wing of a turboprop. At least it drowned out the city noise from the window we left open to try to cool the room.

Conference facilities were a mixed bag. The ballroom space was pretty good, but the networking coffee breaks (which could have been staged in the large foyer adjacent to the ballrooms) were set up in a small conference room at one end of the ballroom floor. Try putting three coffee urns, multiple exhibitors, the conference registration and several hundred conference delegates in a 20x40 foot room and see what happens. A second floor housed multiple smaller conference rooms, with a narrow hallway in a square pattern around a central atrium, again making traffic patterns very cumbersome.

We survived two nights, but couldn't take the thought of a third night, and went elsewhere.

Stayed here for 8 nights so I feel we gave this hotel a good shot. Our check in was smooth even though we had to do it ourself. This might put some people off as it is similar to airport self check in - hit and miss. As for the room - overall quite pleasantly decorated but missing an item I would consider essential - coffee maker. The 24 hour market in the lobby comes to the rescue but I guess it's the nuisance factor here. The pillows were numerous but way too soft as was the bed. I don't understand why so many hotels are using pillow top beds - they sag on the sides where people constantly sit. (I am a firm mattress advocate.)
The hotel is very busy - every 2nd evening there seemed to be an event in the lobby or the ballroom. These were big affairs and they impacted on the elevators and added to the general noise level within the hotel.
The location is the reason we decided to stay here - being right at Grand Central was the deciding factor and the subway was well used by us.

this hotel was absolutely wonderful for a 6 night get away with a friend. the location cannot be beat. you are connected to grand central so you have many ammenities at your finger tips and the fabulous oyster bar. the room was spotless, had a clset and a couple places to sit besides the bed, and had a fridge and safe. there's a great little market downstairs where we cashed in free coffee or water coupons everyday. it was well stocked with fresh fruit, sandwiches, drinks. very handy. the bathroom was a bit small, but oh well - you have to take turns anyway. it's a little pricey, but well worth it.

Room tip: we stayed in a grand double on the 29th floor facing the spectacular chrysler building. very quiet and a wonderful view.

We arrived at the hotel around 11:30pm and the lobby was like a marketplace; lots of people and only one person to check us in. Got to the room, which was very small, had a lumpy room and the bathroom had not been cleaned but was too tired to switch rooms that night. Had to call to have the room cleaned and sheets changed the next day. The hotel is very noisy because there are always loitering in the lobby. The location is ideal but the hotel needs a complete overhaul.
