stayed here a number of years ago - I was looking for a base not a hotel. Lots of American student use this hotel. Found it to be clean and tidy - only downside was that we did not have en-suit but there were plenty of washing facilities so no queue's.

Easy to find and within easy reach of all sightseeing. Felt safe throughout my stay.

we searched for the cheapest option with the best rating and this hotel had a good deal ( compared to other manhattan hotels.) it is at the 17th street , it has clean and cosy rooms. if you would catch a better deal closer to 33th or 42th street, access to subway would be easier. the closest subway to hotel 17 was at 14th street, 3 blocks from the hotel.

Room Tip: 1st and 2nd floor rooms are newly furnished.

There were problems with the plumbing and my room had no water for many hours. I've stayed there before and this is unusual. The place is fine for a few days but not comfortable for a long stay. Clean and excellent proces

I stayed here with my husband and my sister from 26 December- 4 January and was thoroughly impressed with the hotel. As people have pointed out, the rooms are tiny, with little more room than the beds and wash-stand, but the lack of room wasn't really an issue. We had cable TV in the room, a sink/basin, a safe, and a dressing table, so didn't really need much more. The bathroom was directly across from our room, with another a few doors down, and we never encountered any problems with it (always clean, always one available, and if not then it's a short walk to the other corridor and their two bathrooms). The staff were very helpful, pointing us to a cheap dry cleaners down the road with one-day service, and the place itself was very safe (the location is extremely safe, so we never felt in any danger even when returning to the hotel at 5am on New Year's Day!).

The main draw of the hotel is its EXCELLENT location, though. Located in the East Village, it is just a few blocks to Union Square, one of the main transportation hubs, and only a 30 or so minute stroll to Greenwich Village, West Village and SoHo. Staying here we got to experience what it's like to be a New Yorker, rather than just another Manhattan tourist.

Staying in a place with this kind of a location is worth a crazy amount of money, and when you take the very reasonable price of Hotel 17 into account, it's a bargain!

Room Tip: We stayed on the bottom floor and had no problems at all.

In a quieter section of the lower east side, Hotel 17 is a european style hotel with a victorian feel. The rooms kind of feel like small apartments, and are actually quite nice so long as you are not looking for luxury. Dark wood trimming everywhere gives it a bit of a home feel. The rooms have new sinks which is a nice touch to an history building. I recommend asking for a higher floor and/or a room not facing the street, it can get a bit noisy. I found rooms not facing the street are quiet. If you are concerned about shared bathrooms don't be, with 4 bathrooms(including shower) per floor, I was always able to get in. I found the bathrooms and rooms quite clean and the staff was quick to take care of towel refresh and cleaning bathrooms. If your visit to NYC is going to be spent mostly on the town, Hotel 17 will do just fine. Just a few blocks away you can get on the L to connect to uptown/downtown trains. If you want to save $ you can even take the L train to the A train to JFK Airtran, takes about an hour and only costs $7. Compared most Manhattan hotels, this one is an budget friendly option. A short walk and you can be at Union Square or St.Marks.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor, or one that is not facing the street.
