“A light scratching of your itch for Vietnamese”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2012

I've been here twice. Pho is good. Meat is good. Crispy spring rolls and summer rolls are good. Fish sauce is good. Both the broken rice and vermicelli noodles (bún) are too hard / dried out. Price is on the lower end of moderate.

It's decent if you need some Vietnamese food, but your money goes further for better food downtown.

“Vietnamese Calm in Theater District”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2011

We could not get in to Totto Ramen on a rainy night, and Danji had no noodles, so we went to Cha Pa and had salads (OK) and two kinds of pho, both terrific. The broth was very tasty, the noodles were fine, the beef was thinly sliced and rare and there were several condiments to swirl in the soup. Desserts are limited but the black rice pudding with coconut is worth a shot. Service was brisk and professional.
The ginger tea is excellent.

“Excellent casual Vietnamese”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2011

We visited this restaurant twice during our last trip and both times we enjoyed the simple but tasty Vietnamese fare. There is a vast selection for both vegetarians and meat eaters. It is a great place for a quick stop while in this busy neighborhood of NYC. The interior is simple but pleasant and service is quick and attentive.

“Worth the walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2011

Simple and serene whether you are dining alone on a business trip or with friends. Great quaiity Vietnamese/Asian dishes.

I had the Beef Pho and the Chicken Pho. (Two seperate trips.) These are basically noodle bowls, but the seasoning is sublime. Very nice portion sizes.

I would also recommend the Spring Rolls. They were fresh, crunchy, and filled with a delicious mix.

This place is between 8th and 9th so a little way off the Times Square/Broadway route but so worth it to get away from all the chain restaurant mediocrity.

“Room for improvement”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2011

Visited Cha Pas recently. The food was okay, but a fsr cry from real Vietnamese food like what you can eat on Baxter Street in Chinatown. The service was gracious and efficient. The room minimalistic to a fault: they need something on the walls to reduce the negative impact of sound bouncing off the walls. There were three of us and we could barely carry on a conversation due to the excessive noise. Yet, the restaurant was not full that night.

I am willing to try it again in a couple of months
