We were staying in the area and had very limited time to see this museum, but decided to drop in on a Thursday evening in order to see it — or miss it altogether. We shouldn’t have bothered. The front-desk staff member we spoke to was completely unhelpful and just plain rude. (Thursday evening gives patrons a chance to enter and pay an entirely individual entry amount— as they see fit. )
Personally, it is either an individual gift amount up to the discretion of the patron, or it is not. It should NOT be an amount that should be disclosed as it is here. The British Museum in London has a completely free entrance fee with a gift suggestion. No embarrassment. No problem.
Technically, at the New Museum on Thursday evening it’s a gift, and should be treated as such.
It isn’t. It is not the business of staff to pressure-sell the patron. The snooty front desk staff member treated our gift amount with total disdain. It was actually pro rata for the fifteen minutes that we actually had in the museum. There’s no excuse for this type of attitude.
For goodness sake, hire professional staff who actually like dealing with members of public and who have the people skills to engage with them with intelligence and good-natured interest.
This is an important museum spoiled by poor staff.
(The security staff, in contrast, were very pleasant, by the way).

I'm all for contemporary art -- I love New York's MOMA and Guggenheim museums; however, the New Museum takes art to another level that just makes no sense. All of the pieces felt strewn together with no purpose, and the descriptions of each work were as pretentious as they were verbose. Furthermore, the pieces themselves, although conceptual and creative, were not that stimulating. For $18, the price of this museum is steep and you are essentially just paying for the Sky Terrace on the top which offers phenomenal views -- though the views are no excuse to come here.

Visited with three teenagers. They are very open minded and enjoyed the eclectic collection, the adults preferred the sky terrace and the architecture of the building. At $18 an adult it is expensive, thankfully teenagers are free so it made for an affordable outing of about an hour. It’s in a trendy area with local markets outside.

It is called the New museum but it’s been open for over a decade.
It’s quite a small museum with very limited exhibits on every floor , a bit expensive for the 18$ entrance fee per adult ( kids under 18 are free).
We were there for the Song for Sabotage exhibits featuring different works from all over the world addressing this subject. As in every museum, some were more impressive than others. The museum staff watching the rooms were very friendly and knowledgeable .
On Saturday and Sundays, the rooftop floor is open and it offers magnificent of the city!

I stopped in at the New Museum on accident, as I was in the neighborhood for a different purpose. I found the architecture of the museum interesting, but the "art" itself was very strange/weird and did not appeal to me in any way. The descriptions of the art made it seem like the curators/artists just strung together a bunch of multi-syllabic words to sound important and intellectual, but actually had no meaning. I guess if you are into contemporary art, it might be worth visiting, but I wish I had saved my $18 and taken a pass.
