I've been coming to Mike's (from California) for almost 20 years, most recently on an unexpected side-trip (due to flight cancellation) on my way to NYC. Their cannoli are still tops, filled to order while you wait, with a choice of fillings. The lobster tails are huge, with crispy outside and creamy goodness inside. And Boston cream pie: a classic treat. There are lots of cookies, marzipan, and endless varieties of pastries, and of all the things I've tried throughout the years, the only thing that I didn't care for was the Baba Rum Cake, which had some odd and probably traditional flavor, and leaked rum-ish liquid from the box at the airport. Oops.
To avoid the lines, try going at an unpopular time, say during a March snowstorm before noon (as I did). Probably mid-morning and at dinner time are a good bet. If you like pastry, do not leave Boston without checking out Mike's!
PS. You can also mail order cannoli kits, cookies, biscotti, etc. I've had good luck with the cannoli, which arrived fresh, with the filling refrigerated. You follow the instructions to fill the cannoli yourself (so they don't get soggy), and dip the ends in almonds, chocolate chips, etc. that are included in the kit. Not cheap, but perfect to celebrate a special occasion.
