Dining options: Breakfast, After-hours
Description: Fifteen years ago, Dan and Jael Rattigan dropped out of grad school and bought an abandoned cacao plantation in Costa Rica. After opening a cafe (which is still going strong), they gave in to the lure of Asheville, set up a new home base, and opened French Broad Chocolates. The tiny chocolate empire, which includes a lounge, boutique, and chocolate factory, imports cacao from small farms and refines it into bonbons, chocolate bars, brownies, and more. Local ingredients like fresh berries, lavender, and wildflower honey take center stage in several creations.

My husband and I selected a ginger pot de creme and a wonderful piece of cake to split. Both rank in the best chocolate desserts I have ever had. This would be one of my first stops when I return to Asheville.

I have been here twice and I enjoyed both times. We had the milk n’ cookies ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, lemon peppercorn cream brûlée, and honey lavender cake. They can get busy, so plan accordingly, but it’s a nice place for a sweet treat and rest stop after walking around down town.

Great spot to get a chocolate fix. Menu options don't disappoint and plenty of seating and space to relax and enjoy.

I would have given this five stars, but, my Olive Oil Chocolate Cake slice was dry as a bone but looked delectable with the garnish and raspberry glaze on top.

Espresso was delicious and hot cocoa was very enjoyable as it was a chilly night and it hit the spot. It's a little bit touristy too, but, I can appreciate the smell of chocolate and coffee in the air.
