Cornell Hotel de France was an absolute delight! So quaint, beautifully decorated. The hotel is immaculate, all the comforts you could want. I really enjoyed the little tea room they have set up where you can get tea and coffee free of charge. There is a lovely parlour near the front where you can curl up and read a book or newspaper. The restaurant downstairs is
devine. The staff are so helpful, friendly and simply wonderful!! I would have to say that the very best thing about this hotel has got to be the Golden Retriever Michel who greets you when you arrive. So adorable! Access to the trolley system, shopping, restaurants is so close by. I would highly recommend this gem of a hotel to everyone! Thank you again to all the wonderful people there who helped make our stay a truly wonderful experience. We will definitely be back.

This was our first visit to San Francisco and we choose this hotel as it looked unique and would offer a personal service as opposed to being in an impersonal chain hotel.
On checking in;we had a minor problem with the absence of a safe in our room but this was quickly rectified by Frank the Manager.
This was a lovely hotel, and lived up to all our expectations.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel to someone wanting to find a quiet haven away from the bustle of the city with friendly, helpful and efficient staff.

The Cornell Hotel de France is located within easy walking distance of Union Square (downhill to get there), Chinatown, the Powell Street start of the Cable Care and the shops of Market Street. In fact, many other sites, such as the SF Museum of Asian Art and City Hall, are a convenient walk away.

This charming Hotel serves a full American breakfast included in the price of the room (a cheap nearby diner was selling about the same breakfast as a bargain at $11.95.) But this is a gourmet breakfast- eggs with bacon and hash browns, or pancakes or french toast (funny to have french toast in a french hotel-they call it pain perdue or lost bread), orange juice and excellent coffee. And this is not a typical hotel breakfast room with a plastic look. This is the same restaurant where dinner is served, with exposed beams and stone walls with painted pictures of different French scenes. Although we never ate in the restaurant Jeanne d'Arc for dinner, the menu looked enticing and was reasonably priced.

Each floor is beautifully decorated with prints of a famous French artist (we stayed on the Matisse floor.) Our room was pleasant and quiet, clean and well appointed. No complaints at all.

An extra bonus is there is a resident Golden Retriever and a sign that says "A house is not a home without a Golden Retriever." How could anyone not fall in love with a hotel like this.

Room Tip: If you take the BART in from the airport,, get a cab to the hotel. Walking up Powell pulling a wheeled suitcase is a bear.

The hotel is conveniently located to Union Square. The free breakfast is very good. Your choice of eggs with hash browns, bacon and toast or french toast or pancakes. Service was good, very eager to please. It is quite old and the rooms are very small. Our room looked out to a brick wall ( deluxe queen). It also was very musty smelling. But if you want a good value and location, this is right up your alley.
