this is a small family owned hotel in the heart of San Francisco. we were made really welcome with a glass of wine on arrival. We had a junior spa suite which had a little kitchen, which is handy when away for a week so you can eat a simple meal at home now and then. Breakfast was complimentary, muffins, Danish and fruit with beverages as required. Every afternoon there was complimentary wine , cheese and nibbles in the lounge area for an hour, great after a heavy day sightseeing!
The staff were very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere very traditional.
I reccomend getting to the visitor center at the bottom of Powell street and Market to get a guide to the free walking tours in the city, we did the financial district, beautiful buildings and surprising open spaces on roof tops and the tour of Castro famous for the gay community and Harvey Milk. We bought a travel pass for $27 for access to buses , cable cars and trolleys which was a great saving as cable cars are $6 a ride. We did the Alcatraz tour which is a must.We also hired a car from Avis just down the road to drive to Muir woods to see the redwood trees and Stimson Beach.

Room Tip: rooms at the rear are quieter

Hotel needs updating of furniture and rooms.
The rooms come with old furniture, and that moth ball smell.
Unless thats the look and feel there going for, they need revamping.
Although we only used it to sleep...it didnt do much for us especially on our honeymoon.

The good thing is that its only 2-3 blocks from Union Square.

Although quite good located, the Hotel is quite old stuff, with very small "not so clean" rooms.
Positive: FOC wifi access, small business center in the lobby area, happy-hour around 5pm (wine & cheese).

Our family of 5 stayed here for one night only and we were looking for a hotel that bespoke San Francisco as well as being affordable. This was it! We loved the history here and the excitement of the city. We were so close to everything (only blocks away from Union Square and the tram lines) and we knew we were staying in an amazing place. While our room wasn't modern, it was stylish, clean, fresh-smelling, extremely large and very comfortable. We were so happy here that we could have easily stayed longer (there was a kitchen too) - 24 hours in San Francisco just wasn't enough!

This hotel will never be confused for the Fairmont but for a little over 100 bucks on a weeknight in San Francisco it is a good value. The lobby and common areas are really neat. The rooms are very tired but mine was very clean. Old bathroom, old TV etc. neighborhood was ok but I am sure a little sketchy if you were walking around at one in the morning
