I was moved from another hotel to this one because they overbooked. All of my clothes and luggage smell. Not an old smell but a weird musty smell. My door didn't lock. I didn't have a hair dryer. There were used Kleenex tissues in the box in the bathroom. There was something splattered on the wall of the bathroom as well. It is around a homeless shelter so all night I heard people yelling profanities and listening to car horns. It is a joke that they put $50 on your credit card for incidentals. The entire hotel is an incidental.

We are sorry to discover that our hotel was so unsuitable for your needs. This really is a shame - we are known for the wonderful value, and clean comfortable budget accommodation that we offer, and it does not sound as if your room was up to our usual standard. We are sorry that you were not satisfied with our property, and that you did not have a better stay with us. Best wishes, Hotel Management

Across the street from the homeless shelter, all night crazy performances, terribly old and dirty rooms, rude staff, the whole package!!!
As I was driving up to the place in my Uber I was surprised to see a large number of people on the sidewalks. The density of their concentration seemed to peak as we approached the hotel. Turned out the homeless shelter is right across the street from the hotel. All night, as you can imagine, various theatrical scenes passed through the sound waves of the hotel...from Hamlet to Otello...Then there was the inside. The place need remodeling about 95 years ago. The rooms are shamelessly wrecked and nobody cares to make it seem otherwise. True bum hole of San Francisco.

We are very disappointed to note that your stay with us was marred somewhat by the fact that you did not love our location, but unfortunately, homelessness is evident throughout the city, and not exclusively in this area. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your review, and to outline the issues that you experienced within the property also. We are sorry that our property was not better suited to your needs, and that we were unable to give you a great stay. Best wishes, Hotel Management

SF is a great city but the homeless situation has gotten out of control and the Monarch is in the middle of it. The shower didn't work, the toilet ran on-and-off all night... and the hotel smells old and mildew and mold everywhere. Do not book this hotel.

Hi Brian, We are obviously very disappointed to hear that your stay with us was so unsatisfactory. We apologize for all of the issues that arose during your stay; it does not sound as if we provided you with the relaxing stay that the vast majority of our guests receive. We will review your comments with all of our team, and we will put mechanisms in place to ensure that the risk of such issues arising again are minimized. We appreciate your constructive comments, many thanks. Best wishes, Hotel Management

The hotel is located close to the civic centre and lots of homeless shelters. We did not feel safe walking from the station to the hotel. The hotel looked like a homeless shelter from the outside! The lift is very old and did not feel safe. The room was not clean. The bathroom had no hot water. Staff had little to no english and took no accountability for this, and sent a plumber to the room on his own to check out the water. He came to the room, and left without talking to us. We had no idea what was going on. Each time we went to check with staff at reception, someone different was at reception. After a long flight, this was unacceptable. While down at reception we then noticed the proposition 65 notice (google it). We decided after 30minutes it was not safe to stay here. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

First off, no parking which is an extra unnecessary charge on top of an overpriced small hotel. Very small room, no refrigerator inside room, heater? Where the heck was it? Since it was a chilly night in San Francisco I wanted to turn the heat up just a little. But no such thing as a heater. Their WiFi slowed down my internet, not very efficient. So I used my service without it. But at least WiFi was available. Lots of noise, traffic, homeless people making loud noises. I was able to hear it all due to the fact that my room was facing the streets. The only thing I liked about the hotel was, that cable was available and an iron to press my wrinkled clothes. I especially didn’t like that there was a $50 hold for staying here. I already paid for the room for one night... Why the hell would they want to hold $50 extra on my credit card?? For WHAT, exactly? I would recommend finding a hotel with free parking or at least discounted if you book with ‘em. I highly doubt I will return to this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, we really appreciate it. We are very sorry to hear that our hotel did not appeal to you, and that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We pride ourselves on providing clean, comfortable, great value accommodation in this area, and we are sorry that our offering was not suitable for your needs, that we do not have parking facilities, and that our rooms don't have all of the facilities that you would have liked. Like most hotels throughout the U.S., and indeed the world, we take a security deposit to cover any incidental charges such as telephone or food and drink items. We are sorry that this came as a surprise to you, and that our hotel offering was not suitable for your accommodation needs. Best wishes, Hotel Management
