I stayed here for six nights. Hotel is close to the Convention Center and a short walk from the Market Square, shopping etc. Everything was supurb and better than expected. Staff is wonderful, polite, helpful, not noisy. Room was spacious, spotless, Wi-Fi worked flawlessly. A/C worked quietly, did not bother at all. The whole establishment is better than the Marriot Hotel across the street I used to stay at. The restaurant is overpriced though in my opinion. Entrees look great but that is it. I did not find them particularly tasty. Appertizers were good though.

We have been staying at the Mark Hopkins for many years and are Ambassador members, but decided to try this hotel for one night before returning from Wine Country to the airport the next day. We both have conflicted thoughts about a return visit. As other reviewers stated, the location would be OK for convention business, but not so great for anything else in the area; including the fact that it is an isolated peninsula in the Tenderloin District. We absolutely did not venture out at night. Touting LEED and "green" is cliched and pushing the limits at times. The towels were wrinkled, thin and did not look clean. I cut three fingers on the sliding glass bathroom door (glass is not a good idea for a bathroom, as is the lack of a fan for privacy). There were no functioning windows and we kept joking that a fire truck was going to pull up outside our window all night, even though we were on the 23rd floor--needs some noise control. We had a lovely room service dinner, but when we finished up our water, I noticed that the drinking glasses were filthy. Other pet peeves; no urn of coffee in the lobby to grab and go early the next morning, no free Internet, lack of room outlets, no mirror in the room for grooming, telephones that require a PhD to utilize; not to mention the annoying advertisements flashing on a 6"x4" telephone screen and no Sunday newspaper. This hotel is good for young hipsters or nouveau riche who are not yet educated in customer service, although the staff was professional and pleasant.

Even for an Intercontinental Hotel the service was better than expected. Concierge, front desk, doormen and others were always looking to help, but not in a disturbing way. Terrific staff. We were upgraded to a corner room on a high floor, the views were great and the room size very large. The room was made up early in the morning (before 11 am) every day which was helpful for us as we came back a couple of times during the day to rest from all the walking. The location was perfect, we could walk to almost anywhere downtown and it was only a couple of blocks from the cable car.

Room Tip: Corner rooms (03) have large windows and views in two directions.

I stayed here for two nights while in town for business. The location, right next to the Moscone Center, is fantastic. The room was very comfortable and the views are great. Everyone that I dealt with that worked there went above and beyond. Even though I arrived a few hours before the check-in time they had a room available and checked me in. The concierge was incredibly helpful when I had questions about stores in the area. The gym is well equipped with a variety of machines. This is definitely one of the better hotels I have stayed at in the area and I plan on staying here again.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room on a higher floor. The views are impressive.

If you're looking for a smart, modern hotel in downtown San Francisco, with easy access to transport options - this could be the place for you.

It's pricey, especially if you add on the extravagant extras for internet, phone calls and breakfast. And, of course, tax! But in a city which is a magnet for conventions and incentive travel, rates can shoot up and down to match demand.

Getting locked into a high advanced purchase (no refund on cancellation) can be a gamble, as these rates can be artificially high - only to drop closer to the date to fill the hotel, so that you end up paying far more than the flexible rate ruling on the arrival day. But that's not unique to this hotel.

Staff are friendly and helpful, rooms bright and comfortable. The immediate area is OK but far from the best: you might not want to venture further South of Market when the streets are empty. Powell BART station is only a couple of blocks north, on Market - so transport to and from the airport is easy for those without too much baggage.

Powell is also a MUNI station, so you can get around town quite easily. Bloomingdales is in the large shopping mall between the hotel and Market street, and you can walk quite comfortably along Market street to the Embarcadero Ferry Terminal market/shopping/eating area. Walking the other direction the atmosphere deteriorates quickly. Crssing Market you are within easy reach of Union Square and (a little further) Chinatown.

Room Tip: ZHigher floor rooms get you THE view!
