Description: You don't get more San Francisco than Scala's, located just off the Powell Street cable car line, steps from Union Square. And with great location comes great responsibility: that's why we work hard to maintain our reputation as one of the city's most essential dining destinations by creating an atmosphere as sophisticated and inviting as the food we bring to the table.

Scala is a lovely and lively bistro. Recommended to have reservations. It is around the corner from Saks Fifth Avenue at Union Square and less than a block from the St. Francis Hotel. Our tasty Italian meal was tasty, innovative and eye-pleasing. The waiter we had was helpful with the menu explaining some of the entrees and perfectly attentive to us. It is in the lower level of a hotel, so the restroom is on the second level up, but there's an elevator, so this restaurant works fairly well for any one with accessibility needs. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here on a Sunday evening. Urbane, sophisticated, but not stuffy and the food was good, very good. Bon appetit!

We loved our dinner experience so much we returned for Breakfast a few days later.
Dinner was sublime. 3 adults & 2 teenagers all equally loved their dinner choice. The service was faultless & friendly. Delicious wines.

Breakfast was equally as enjoyable & the best coffee we'd had in SF.

We ate here while staying at the Drake this past week and had an excellent breakfast. I ordered the chilaquiles and my companion had the eggs, potatoes and toast. We ate at about 10am and that held us until after 6pm! Large portions, very well made. I would certainly go here again.

Just a good simple meal with good wine and great friendly service. Hostess was very welcoming and since I was alone (and without reservation) seated me in the bar. I had a Ceasar salad which was above average. Had simple pasta with clams and tomato sauce. Everything was fresh and really hit the spot. I really appreciated the option to order a "carafe" of any of their wines-by-the-glass. What a great idea- I could drink my usual 2 glasses of wine without all the fuss of bothering the waiter for another. Finally, the waiter was great-answered menu questions and he was there when you needed something and invisible when you didnt. Pricing seemed reasonable for the area.
