“Scary location but good hostel inside”
Reviewed 20 July 2011

Hostel has good service in general, except some rude people come in to work in the kitchen sometimes, but the location is NOT recommended, due to a number of scary homeless and drug people on the streets around the hostel, any route you take (some routes you don't take at all, unless you want to get mugged). Ask employees about safer ways to main street. If you want to walk in groups, the location is OK, just not for a single traveler, especially female.

The hotel is situated quite central to everything. The town square is a brisk 10 minute walk. Upon arrival we were informed of the "unsafe" zone, where a lot of homeless people are. We were inducted very well into the hotel.
The lifts are a bit old, but that is the charm of San Francisco. Our room was pleasant and well heated for January. The bed was comfortable if not a bit bouncy. The shower was really the only downer, you had to let it run for a good 15 minutes before it was warm. Room was secure.
Internet was about $1 per 30 minutes, and the Skype receivers did not work.
Breakfast was basic (cereal, bagels, pancakes), but good enough for me.
This place really is just to stay over and venture out into the City most of the time. Is a really good base, and quite close to clubs. I would stay here again, wasn't thrilled with it, but it is a hostel and have stayed in worse places!

I stayed here because i'm a HI member ive always liked staying at the HI hostels when im travelling. This one was no different, i think the biggest plus was the free bagels we got in the morning. The staff were friendly and helpful. They were great with giving directions or tips on where to go plus there is information in the foyer about activities in SF.

The one complaint we have about it is one of our party were put in a seperate room on the first night. We emailed the hotel and asked to be in the same room as we had booked seperately and they guarenteed we would be in the same room but that wasnt the case when we got there. We were put all together on the remaining night though.

Other than that would definately recommend. A short walk from the bus stop and not far from Union Square.

For a hostel it was great, lots of social activities, staff are friendly and helpful when needed... the downside.. it's location right next door to the tendaloin district meaning that no matter what time of day it's dangerous to be walking the street alone.

I stayed in a private room with a friend and wasn't impressed that it was 1 bed in a small room instead of 2 beds in an average sized room, considering that I was travelling with a friend two of us sharing the one small bed didn't seem like an option so my friend got the bed and I got the very hard and uncomfortable floor.. would love to see the place find the room for a laundry cause to get to the nearest laundromats you have to walk down all the streets they tell you not to go down.

overall it's a good place just needs a few things added to it and it would become a wonderful place to stay!!

On the point of arriving at this Hostel, I had previously stayed in around 5 other hostels during my travels, including the USA Hostel just a few blocks away in downtown San Fran.
I thought that this Hostel was great in terms of its cheap internet and it had great social activities including movie nights where there was lots of great free food! The bar downstairs had great prices on drinks and was very good in terms of socializing. I was pleasantly surprised to find an en-suite bathroom in my four bed dorm room as it did not stipulate this on the booking so that was good.
However the downsides to this Hostel were: Its Location on Ellis street right in the dodgy Tenderloin district of San Fran felt very unsafe during the day and even more so at night. Being a woman on my own I felt very uncomfortable walking down the street to the hostel and chose instead to walk further up the adjacent street in order to avoid it. Also the internet was a bit expensive and very unreliable. Overall it wasn't a bad hostel aside from the location
