We lived in San Francisco, and have been here several times since moving away, but we had never taken a trip to Angel Island. Grab a ferry, take along some food, and make the trip out to the island. The ride to and from is nice with great views all around including Alcatraz Island. There are hiking trails all over the island and a number of old historical sites including an old immigration center, and lots of former military installations including a former Nike missile site. There are several ferries to and from each day. We hiked the circumference of the island in about three hours. All along the trails there are fabulous views of the City, of the bridges and of Saucilito, Tiburon and Mt. Tam to the north. Once away from the visitor center we saw very few people. A really great place to hike just minutes from the bustle of San Francisco. There are also motorized tours for those less willing or able to hike, and there are bike trails as well.

Spending a day ferrying over to Angel Island, hiking around, eating a picnic lunch (which I definitely recommend, make sure to pick up sandwiches on the main land), and exploring the old buildings is one of my favorite bay activities. If you want to do a hike, but not drive a ways out of the city, grabbing a ferry to the island is a good choice. Once on the island you get fantastic views of the city and can take in the old forts/hospitals/buildings and their histories as well as hike one of their several trails. Make sure that you plan your trip around the ferry schedule. The ferry doesn't run as often in the winter to be mindful of the times so you can get the most out of your day, but not feel stranded for more hours than you'd like.

This was a remarkable place! I wish I had known to schedule more time here, not just the hour tram ride and a bit of time to eat. One could spend a whole day here hiking and checking out buildings that are available to tour. Rather than just being something done on the way to Alcatraz, this is an destination in itself.

From Pier 39 you can ferry to Angel Island at various times throughout the day. It's a fun ride on a ferry with restrooms, snack bar, and plenty of seating indoors below or outdoors up-top. After docking at Angel Island it's a short walk to catch a sight-seeing tram, rent bikes, visit the restrooms (surprisingly clean), or grab a snack at the small restaurant. All very convenient. (Be sure to consult the tram schedule before going - don't dawdle, it leaves fairly soon after the ferry docks!) Hiking trails abound and there is plenty to see. In addition to the natural beauty of the island, there is a wealth of history - immigration, Civil War, WWII - to see. From all sides of the island there are stunningly beautiful views of the city, the bridges, and all around the Bay. If taking the tram, the visit could be squeezed into a half day. If hiking, more time is required, especially if you want to see and experience the whole island (recommended!). There are picnic tables here and there - you can pack your own picnic or buy food at the concession near the dock.

Angelo Island is a great place to hike if you want to see the whole bay. It has a circular road around the island (5 miles) that is level. It has multiple paths to the top of the island (for moderately skilled hikers). It has a trolley line that visitors can take if they are not up to the hike. The sites are very interesting and the perspective of the bay and the vistas are not matched anywhere in the bay area. Warning: If you have kids not ready for a 5 mile walk then plan on taking a shorter walk west from the portal so you can see the Golden Gate Bridge first. To get to the island you have to take a short ferry ride from Tiburon so be sure to check on the schedule before you go. Also, plan on at least a half day visit. We usually go over in the morning, take the 5 mile circular walk, then eat at the beautiful Tiberon waters edge shopping area where the ferry departs from. Plenty of paid parking available.
