The staff was excellent. We were in our room less than 15 minutes after arriving at the hotel. We had a couple of drinks in the small lounge. We had two different bartenders. Both of them were very helpful. Told us cool places to go for food and drink. The room is small but very cozy. Plenty large enough for a couple on vacation. The bed was very comfortable. The room had a huge bathtub. Now my girlfriend wants one that size at home. Location is perfect for whatever you want to do in the city. We will definitely be going back to The Chancellor.

The Chancellor was a wonderful hotel to stay at for many reasons. The people there were very friendly and helpful. The location, right near Union Square, was perfect for us. It's an older hotel and although it doesn't have all the amenities of a larger hotel (room service, gym), the small rooms were clean and very comfortable. The price was very reasonable, which included garage space for our car.

I stayed here for two nights, the staff were efficient & friendly. The apples, water, coffee & cookies are nice touches. The room was a bit worn round the edges but the furnishings & bed were quite stylish & comfortable. I had an adjoining room & the first night was very noisy, the second was fine. The cable cars go past the front windows so it is not peaceful but it is very well situated, close to Union Square & public transport. I would definitely come here again.

Cannot praise this hotel enough. Staff, Location, Rooms all excellent. The Tour desk was first class for information and booking trips and airport transfer etc. Spent 7 nights here and did something different every day. Right by Cable car stop. Was very sad to leave San Francisco.

We were not really familiar with the area but relied on some of the previous reviews. Most were spot on. My wife and I spent a long weekend at the Chancellor Hotel and were pleasantly surprised at being able to get just about anywhere within the city without having to depend on a car. We were able to get to where we wanted to go in the city using just about every mode of transportation within walking distance of this hotel. The room was small but clean, comfy and well maintained. Would have given it a better rating if the room was a bit larger. Everything in the hotel seemed undersized compared to some of the other hotels I have visited, but that's what gives this hotel it's character. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Was a plus to be able to buy tix for the cable car, trains, and buses from the lobby. Being downtown, and hopefully not sounding too insensitive, but be prepared to be hit up for change by the local hobos at least three times on every block. Overall we had a very positive experience and probably would stay here again on our next trip to SF.

Ah, the joys of serving people in a historic hotel...
Everything they said it true and correct. However, I think it is a little unfair to give us a lower rating because they wish the room was a bit larger. I wish that too! The rooms are not a bit larger, and never were, and never will be (as far as I know). Nearly every review on here mentions the room size and that should have been known - yet they booked us anyways when that was an issue. I wish people wouldn't do that. It is not good for them or fair for us. Then, what confuses me is that they write "but that's what gives this hotel it's character" - which sounds like that's a good thing(?) Having character should be a plus and give us an extra point, not a minus.
