Owner description: Since 1873, cable cars have run up and down the hilly city, though after the 1950s, these cars have been kept in operation more out of historic nostalgia. Seventeen miles of track remain and have been deemed a historical landmark.

This was an experience that we will not soon forget! The trip was such fun, and was an amazing feeling to ride up and down the hilly streets of San Francisco! We took the cable car to China Town which made for a quick ride. I do suggest that you study the map before heading out if you have a specific destination in mind, as it felt a bit tricky to know when to get off. It was quite interesting to see how they turn the cable cars around at the main stop... a very manual procedure and interesting to watch!

OK, it was my first time in SF so we had to take a ride on the trolley, and it wasn't so bad and actually pretty fun. We were able to take the Powell Street line which started right down the block from the Westin St. Francis. As it turned out, we didn't have the friendliest operator, but his gruff demeanor didn't bother us much since we had hit the Grass Roots dispensary before our ride DING! DING! Up the big hill and down and around, we exited at Lombard Street. No questions were answered by the surly cable car man, but he did prevent one of our party from getting his head conked by an oncoming truck when he leaned out too far off the step.
It took me 55 years as a NYer to get to the Statue of Liberty, but I did get to ride a cable car on my first San Francisco visit. If you've never done it you pretty much have to.

Please try this to get the full experience of the city! It is only 17 bucks! And the road is calming breath of fresh air in the crowded city!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! The cable cars themselves maybe iconic to San Francisco but the entire experience was completely ruined by the extremely rude and unhelpful cable car operators. It was beyond frustrating trying to have them answer simple directional questions and they were so short with the customers that it was a stain on the beautiful city. Not ever going to waste the time, money and energy riding them again. It would be better to have just gotten on a city bus or driven myself. Very disappointed!

Hard to resist the allure of riding one of SF's iconic cable cars and are on most must do list for first time traveler. However, you may have to endure long waits and a hefty price tag for the privilege of riding one. A tip is to hop on the car at one of the stops along the route instead of the terminal stops, but signage for these cable car stops can be confusing and hard to spot.
