Visited Pier 39 a couple of times during one stay and it is a great way to spend a few hours. You can get the F bus from Market Street and will drop you off right beside the pier.

We walked all along Fisherman’s Wharf and reached Pier 39 on a sunny Sunday lunchtime in March.
As might be expected it was packed, we found lots of interesting shops and restaurants, there were entertainers and amusements, something for all ages. We felt safe walking about, nobody bothering us and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, it was just like we imagined and a fun way to spend some time.
