You need to buy tickets in advance as they sell out fast, even at that price! Be there at least 1/2 hour before your time slot; Catch the 10 mt ferry ride to alcatraz island; get down and then your guided tour starts; it is for 45 mts. The guide was energetic and had enough info to give and made jokes here and there to keep the crowd involved; there are trams going right during the tour, and the whole group listening to the guide has to stop, move into both sides of the street to give way for the tram. The guide then has to remember where he left off and continue or start a whole new spiel. This happened to us twice in the 45 mt tour. It was very annoying to some parents with small children since they had to move their strollers, spots were lost since everything gets so jumbled; there are planes flying every few mts since it is close to the airport and that does not help either. But overall, the guide tried to keep up with the noise from the people that had finished their tour earlier or not yet started on their tour and talked over all this plus the seagulls flying so low right over people's heads etc was very amusing to see, as long as it doesn't happen to one. Then you go on an audio tour; sound quality was pretty clear and kids could follow the audio tour and move along quite easily. Kids could also participate in Jr ranger activities and earn badges, which is quite good to get them interested in national parks and their conservation etc. overall, not bad a tour except for the interruptions, which are unavoidable i guess, considering the amount of people that visit. each ferry, carries nearly over 300 guests, i believe.
