If you are planning to head to Maine, make sure to send some time in Bar Harbor. The picturesque landscape will take your breathe away. Acadia National Park is a must see. You can take a scenic drive through the park to the top of Cadillac Mountain which is the first place you can see the sunrise on the East Coast. There are plenty of trails for hiking, biking and walking. The sandy beach at the park is in a section which costs $20 per car to enter but pass is good for the week, so try to use it towards the beginning of your stay. Other parts of the park are free. Try to time visiting Thundering Hole during high tide to make the most of that unique spot.
We stayed at the bed and breakfast Cleftstone Manor. The breakfast was amazing and it was a cute quaint place to stay. You have access to use the indoor/outdoor pool and hot tub at the hotel next store. I wouldnt have wanted to stay anywhere else. Only disadvantage is that you would need to drive into town or take the bus. It is a bit of a walk to get there.
Downtown is your perfect little shopping heaven. Several blocks filled with boutique type shops has something for everyone. Although we had some difficulty finding dog friendly lodging, there must be enough around because EVERYONE had their dogs walking around downtown.
Lastly, if you are going to be in Bar Harbor, you can't leave without taking the Bar Harbor Whale Watching tour. It takes the boat about an hour to get to the feeding grounds, you get to watch the whales for about an hour, and then one hour to return. 95% rate of seeing the whales, and what a wild thing to see for your own eyes! Its worth the money. Hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did!
