“A disappointing trip to paradise”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

My husband and I have traveled frequently to Maui and have stayed at the Westin many times over the years. However more recently we have been staying hotels in the Wailea area and decided to go back to the Ka'anapali side and stay at a hotel we frequented often. Upon arrival we noted that the grounds were still quite beautiful and were greeted warmly and escorted the the "newer" Beach Tower where we used to stay many years ago. We are Starwood preferred guests and expected a nicer room and good location but to our dismay our room was close to the elevator, over looking the top of a pavillion and part of a pool area and had a partial ocean view. While we were not thrilled with our view we were even more disturbed with the cleanliness of the room. The furniture was extremely dusty, there were numerous finger prints and marks on the door, greasy looking areas on the headboard, a marble shelf next to a coffee station with sticky residue and a rusted cracking cabinet that housed a refrigerator. A dirty decorator pillow and the frosting on the cake was finding some prior guests underwear still on a shelf in the closet!!!!!!! We tried changing rooms but were told they were completely booked and had to have housekeeping come three times before it was acceptable. Additionally through all of the complaining it was very difficult to get through to guest services to even get attention and had to literally go downstairs to the front desk to complain. Next problem was the restaurant Tropica with cold food and beyond slow service that made our first night the beginning of a disappointing trip to paradise. The pool areas are beautiful but crowded with the most uncomfortable chairs, no cushions unless you want to rent a cabana you cannot get a cushion!! The highlight of this hotel are the bellmen, valet's who have been there for many years and still are extremely helpful personable and cheerful. Unfortunately that cannot be said for the rest of management who after all of our concerns only response was sorry for your concerns and hope you will return and we can do better! Well I think that is NOT going to happen as we will take our travels to Maui elsewhere

The location is very good - close to lots of restaurants and shopping at Whaler's Village. Lovely beach with surfing, snorkeling and whale watching tours right off the beach.
Rooms were nice, beds were comfy, service was very good. Elevators are a bit slow. Gardens are beautiful with waterfalls and koi ponds. Ocean view rooms can be a little noisy at night with pools and restaurants / bars below.

Room Tip: The higher floors have better ocean views

We stayed in different places while in Hawaii and really liked the stay at the Westin. The lobby was nice, the kids liked the pools and waterslide, and we were close to snorkeling at Black Rock. We actually saw fish and a few things (squid?) while snorkeling right in front of the hotel. The beach out front was a soft sand and had waves for the kids to ride. Our room looked pretty new and was clean and comfortable with a small refrigerator. Our only disappointment was that we are SPG gold members and we were hoping for an upgrade from a mountain view to ocean view and didn't get one (we always seem to get one with Marriott). We stayed with points so I'm not sure about the cost but it was a relaxing, enjoyable stay.

Maui Westin Resort greets you with a shell lei at the door, followed by a great Koi pond, and awesome waterfall. From there you can wander about the many pools and waterslide, that includes an adult pool area and 4 family pools. The staff was friendly and quick to assist. Drink and snack prices were as would be expected for a resort of this nature. All in all it was a pleasant stay.

We did a week here in February a year ago and had such a terrific time we booked it again. And it was as good if not better this time! We like to kick back and relax and the Westin makes it pretty easy. The hotel was full -- it was leading up to Washington's birthday weekend. Although it was busy it never felt anywhere close to jam-packed. It didn't hurt that we got a generous Starwood upgrade to a junior suite in the Beach tower that included an extra spacious bathroom. Hotel staff remembered my wife's birthday with a beautiful cake and a pricey bottle of champagne! The room was perfectly quiet at night, and had a spectacular ocean front view. We could sit in our sitting room, look out the balcony and see whales breaking! My wife and I were both hooked on fish tacos for lunch served poolside. The fish was mahi mahi, perfectly fresh. The servers, Lupe and Allison, both remembered us from last year! They took great care of us. Parking was never an issue; valet parking was free when self-parking got full at night. Last year our vacation highlight was a concert by Elton John at the MACC center. This year we took a recommendation to see Warren and Annabelle's magic show in Lahaina and it was hilarious and amazing. We are still convinced that the Westin's location is one of its best assets, within reasonably walking distance of shopping and plenty of restaurants -- even a McDonald's Express and a submarine sandwich shop. My only gripe -- I wish the pools were heated a bit warmer. At a large property like this it's not easy making everybody happy. But when I look around at the Westin I sure don't see any unhappy faces. We'll be back, for sure.
