My wife and I rented camping equipment from Michello for 2 nights in early October. Everything we needed was provided and was great quality. We spent the 2 nights at Waianapanapa and it was awesome! It's such a beautiful place to explore. From the black sand beach to the caves and the trails, it was all awe inspiring. The real treat if you camp here is that you get the chance for photos of the beach without any other people on it! Once the sun goes down the beach is an excellent spot to enjoy some wine while star gazing and listening to the waves :) We highly recommend camping here!!!
There are 2 parts to this review. The equipment and the location. They are differant. Basically this is a camping rental service and a State Park.
The camping rental service was good. A home based operation where you pick up and return the equipment, in Kihei. We weren't told where to pick up until the day before, so that made us a little nervous, but it worked out fine. The equipment was mostly new and all in good condition. We added the cooking package, which was a great option. They provided everything we needed and really happy about that. Only 2 minor issues, HELLO OWNER:
1. you need to include a frying pan
2. that fabic softener that you used on the sheets and pillow cases was WAY too much. Overwhelming. Could barely breathe, had to really air out the linens before use because of it.
I would have told the owner that when returning the equipment but even though we could see people in the house and could hear them talking, no one came out to get the equipment, which seemed a little weird. We just left it in the garage.
But all in all, everything was great and I do recommend Hana Camping Under The Stars and this is why:
The Wai'anapanapa State Park- OMG! Flipping awesome! You do have to make a separate reservation through the State Park system and pay $19 but so, so worth it. First off, we are not campers by nature but really decided to do this so we could really explore the park because it has so much to offer. The place is beautiful, go read about it. But the best thing........ there is no one there in the early morning. No one but other campers, of which there were 4 others besides us and they we packing up and leaving as we were frying bacon (in a sauce pan). No tourists or local visitors to speak of until about 9am. 2 glorious hours of us and nature. We hiked a bit and is was just wonderful to avoid the crowd that visits the black sand beach and all. The ranger was not particularly friendly but not rude, mostly ambivalent.
A truly wonderful experience and actually the 2 days spent here were our favorite part of 3 weeks spent on Maui. Mahalo!
Falling asleep under the stars and to the sounds of nature was exactly what my soul needed. I woke up feeling recharged and ready to explore more of Hana!
Being able to rent camping equipment was great. Everything we needed for 2 people was packed and organized!! I would definitely do this again.
