A lot of marine birds, tropical birds, Frigates, all doing aerobatics around you. And the Albatroses: a rare place to see their nesting and famous courting (although fro relatively far: there are free telescopes and binoculars). Also a good place to see the local Nene. DON'T MISS!

Liked: beautiful vistas, close-ups of seabirds (including Albatrosses), freely available binoculars for use there
Info: costs $5 to get to the lighthouse and the best views

The Kilauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 and decommissioned in 1976 when an automatic electronic beacon was installed. The site is now a historical landmark that is very enjoyable to see. From the point you can see playful whales with the free binocular viewing stations. There is an entry fee of $5 per person, but if you are a senior (age 62) you can pay $10 and enter any National Park for life and kids under 16 are free. The Fresnel lens is an array of lens and prisms built in France for a total costs of $12,000 in 1913. You can spend as much time as want leisurely walking around and the enjoying the views. You will likely spend less than an hour at this attraction.

We saw this time ALL the available birds - March to May is the best time to see them nesting. We saw boobies, frigate birds, tropic birds, and ne-ne. Also saw 2 turtles below the lighthouse (it's over 200' feet down, so they were pretty large turtles!) Pay the money to walk all the way out - they have binoculars to borrow, and free mounted telescopic binoculars too.
