My wife and I spent 2 nights in Tutu's Cottage, a super cozy 1920s bungalow at Kilaeau Lodge in Volcano Village. This was about the homiest place we've ever stayed. It was spotless, comfortable and had a very vintage feel we loved. The restaurant is in the main lodge building. The only down side - the tradeoff for the privacy and solitude is that it's sort of a long walk (but very short drive) from the cottage to the main building and hot tub. The tub is surrounded by lush vegetation and very relaxing. The restuarant is a bit pricey, but food and service are excellent. Staff is very attentive and accomodating. This place is great for those willing to pay for quality and serenity with a vintage, boutique touch, right on the doorstep of Hawaii Volcanoes N.P.

Room Tip: Tutu's Cottage is very private and peaceful!

We have eaten here twice in the evening, once as a family and once with friends visiting the island. The ambiance is good, the staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. The food is average, it could not be compared to even basic good restaurant food in most parts of Europe. Despite this, the prices are high and the dishes and flavours are not for the discerning or experienced palate. The ingredients are mostly local and there's a good variety of ingredients, especially of fish and meat, but the dishes themselves are rather pedestrian, often heavy, with jangling juxtapositions of incongruent flavours. As someone with some small experience of reviewing European cuisine in Europe, I would surmise that the chef has not had professional training. Although he shows little flair for even basic European cooking, the food presentation is thoughtful and the dishes, lacking as they may be in culinary merit, are, I feel, created with care and enthusiasm. I hear very good things about the restaurant breakfasts.

Room Tip: Have only been to the restaurant, never stayed in the hotel

After spending a day hiking in Volcanoes National Park, there is no better way to unwind than by eating and sleeping at this super-adorable lodge! The staff was friendly and accommodating, the grounds were inviting, cozy and well-kept. We stayed in the Cottage, which is a stand-alone building with a living room, fireplace and bedroom and bathroom and gorgeous stained glass windows. Other rooms are in the lodge and there's a common room with fireplace, movies, games, etc. The restaurant is awesome! We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The Cottage!

We stayed as a result of a recommendation from the concierge at the Fairmont Orchid. What a great little bed and breakfast escape! We stayed one night, wished we had stayed longer. Big beautiful room, great bed with a wonderful old hawaiian quilt, fireplace and small balcony. Beautiful flowers throughout the grounds. Heated towel rack, too, a great surprise. We also ate dinner there, and were thrilled with the offerings. Breakfast in the morning was also a pleasant surprise. It was included with the room, and as such I expected a minimal cold breakfast. It was a full breakfast offering and it was as great as dinner. The lodge is a great jumping off point to visit the Volcana National Park, which is why we stayed there.

We stayed at Tutu's Place in March of 2011. This cottage is amazingly charming and you feel like you are living here in town instead of just passing through. There is more than enough room for four adults. The decor feels very "Old Hawaii." We would be happy to stay here again on our next visit to Volcano. Oh, and it was exceptionally clean!
