“Birder's paradise!”
Reviewed 2 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We stayed in the apapane guest cottage (complete with apapanes!). We travelled a lot and do not remember when we have had a more enjoyable stay - anywhere.

Dale and Cindy, the owners, are photographers and birders, and amazing people and the very best hosts. They helped us as a tropical storm approached, with birding locations, where to go hiking, and where to eat and shop.

We highly recommend this beautiful place.

Sad to leave it, but so happy to know we have a lovely place to return.

“Didn't want to leave”

When my wife and I were looking for a place to stay near Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, we stumbled upon these cottages and were intrigued. Our criteria for a place was simple. We needed it to be quiet, clean, and not too expensive. We are willing to pay a bit more if we can get a nice place, but we don't need anything fancy. This place offers all that and so much more.

Even before we walked into the guesthouse, we were impressed. The place is tucked away, off a quiet road and hidden amongst the trees and foliage of the rainforest. Walking into the place, we both gasped and said, "Wow!" The place is amazing. It far exceeded our expectations. There is a decent sized kitchen stocked with everything you will need for a group of people including a cooler to take with you for the day. The fridge was stocked with milk and yogurt and there was a papaya and granola cereal on the table. A fresh bag of coffee beans with grinder and coffee maker was also on the counter.

There is a large open area with seating for 4-5 people around a nice gas fireplace. The bed is at the end of the room with a large closet and dresser for storing your things. A set of french doors open up to a patio that runs the length of the building with a view of the lush greenery that surrounds the building.

The bathroom is quite large with a HUGE shower with two shower heads and a massive window looking out to the private treed area next to the building. The cabinets are stocked with supplies including bandages, suntan lotion, and other necessities.

During our time there, we felt that we were in our own private garden house as we never saw a single soul. The owners had mentioned that we were not likely to see them while we were there unless we needed them for something. On return from Hilo one night, we thought we had lost our key and after much digging around throughout the car, we ended up calling them. They were so understanding and helped us get back into the place in a matter of minutes. Funny thing is, we ended up finding the key later on.

We would have loved to have stayed here longer. The place was absolutely spotless and exactly what we needed. The cool evenings, the warm days, the quiet gardens, and the 5 minute drive to the national park made it the ideal place to stay while on the Big Island.

If we ever return, we will absolutely stay here again. We will make sure to tell all of our friends about the best place to stay on the Big Island.

We entered saying wow and we left saying the same thing. Thank you!

Liked best: The beautiful location and the cleanliness
Liked least: Only a small issue with cell phone access, but that isn't a problem with the guesthouse. It has to do with the proximity of the town.

We found our 2 bedroom unit to be absolutely beautiful and comfortable. The furnishings and finishing touches on the place were extraordinary. Cindy and Dale are hosts that can give you excellent tips about where to hike, eat and play! They have many resources to help you identify plants and birds as well.

“Little Piece of Rainforest Paradise”

I could gush for hours about the Hiker's Retreat. The small little bungalow was beautifully kept, quiet and everything we could have asked for as we explored Volcano. Dale was a wonderful host, making it easy to collect the keys, immediately fixing the wifi when it went down and making sure we had his full contact information and resources when a tropical storm loomed (luckily it never hit!).

The Hiker's Retreat is a cozy get away for two. The multiple skylights let in plenty of natural light so it feels like you're sleeping under the stars. One morning when we woke up, it was so soothing to hear the rain tap on the windows, we almost didn't want to start our day! The private lanai was wonderful and as you strolled back on the property, you were met by small winding trails and a peaceful stream.

Thank you Dale for an absolutely perfect stay during our vacation at Volcano!

“Suited Us Perfectly”

We stayed for 6 nights (the 6th was free!) and enjoyed it immensely. We felt secluded and peaceful in the Apapane cottage; the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped (coffee, granola and fresh fruit [for the 1st day] provided), the cottage layout was great and the grounds were amazing. The location was 5 minutes from Volcanoes NP, but was well off the main highway and dead quiet at night. Easy access to restaurants, gas, supplies, etc. and also only 25 minutes to Hilo. The best part was the cool weather, it was nice to escape the tropical heat of the coast. Should we return to the area, we will plan our trip around the availability of the cottage; we liked it that much.
